Catalyst 6509

Does anyone have experience with the above? e.g when purchased, is it just a chassis that you then buy modules for or does it come with certain config/hardware as standard? Is it a switch with ports out of the box?

Depends. You can buy the chassis separately, but if you don't already have line cards, sups and power supplies that's kind of a waste. Most organizations will buy a package deal that will include everything, hopefully with a bit of a discount!

If you are thinking of buying one for a lab its probably not a very practical idea.

What is the purpose of the supervisor engines? Does the chassis have 9 slots? What would a typical setup be for a 6509?

This is deffo not for a lab environment, bit out of my price range! Just curious as normally all we hear about are 2950, 3560 etc...

These are a range of cisco devices typically used for the core of a network in a medium-to-enterprise business. You buy a chassis which can have 1 or more PSUs, number of user customisable cards (like a 48 switchport module, or fibre connections etc).

The Supervisor regulates the resources each card needs, and also connects each card to it's switching backplane. This means that one cards switchport can communicate with another cards switchport much faster than a typical switch-to-switch configuration.
