Softphhones needing a separate VLAN from data?

I am working on answering a question for a customer and I have hit a road block.
I have deployed and managed several networks using hard sets for VoIP and have set up VLANs for VoIP and data.
Now, I am being asked about soft-phones. Do they need or can VLANs be used?

The same VLAN can be used but best practice is to separate the voice out for QoS and security purposes.An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made.
