Softphhones needing a separate VLAN from data?

I am working on answering a question for a customer and I have hit a road block.
I have deployed and managed several networks using hard sets for VoIP and have set up VLANs for VoIP and data.
Now, I am being asked about soft-phones. Do they need or can VLANs be used?

Nope, it is not possible.What I am working on
