Question
Does anyone know if you can claim the price of the exam on your taxes as a deductible? Say further education or advancing skills?

If you are already self employed in IT, then you should be able to write it off against earnings, but you need to talk to a professional before doing so. If you are a w-2 employee, then unless you are already itemizing deductions, I doubt it would be beneficial to start for the price of a few tests. -

If you pay out of pocket for an IT course, you may be eligible for somewhat of a credit though - Publication 970 (2011), Tax Benefits for Education
Having a tax professional you can talk with is always the best course of action though. -

I'd agree that asking a tax professional is the best choice.
I know that if you have a technical business, you can claim the price of exams, books, technical subscriptions, and professional fees as business expenses.
