No Promotion for Me :(

the_Grinchthe_Grinch Member Posts: 4,165 ■■■■■■■■■■
I knew it probably wasn't going to happen, but I thought maybe they'd have something else in the works for me. But, officially, after my review I will not be promoted to Senior Technical Support Specialist. My boss did fight for me, but the VP claims his hands were tied and he didn't know how much they'd let him do. But my argument to my boss was that they still did not provide a path for me so I know what I need to achieve in order to be promoted. Also, in my reviews, most of the goals hinge on funding and if they allow us to move forward with those projects. So I'll probably officially start looking after the holiday break.

A lot of times you have to move on to move up in this industry. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that, Grinch, but this could be the best thing long-term for you. I, like others, often received my best bumps by jumping ship

Its already been said. If they have no reason other than funding to move you up, then no since in waiting until the next time when you could be 20K plus richer in another company and have a review coming from them.

Like others have said, I've gotten my big increases by switching companies. It kind of sucks when you like where you work, but a 3-5k raise vs a 10-20k increase is a no brainer.

Take this advice!!! It's how I finally got out of helpdesk and on to Systems Admin work. There are only three of us and our job requires us to work with a lot of different technologies to include my favorite (Cisco).

Yeah just sucks because I was hoping to find a place to actually stay as I've jumped around a bit. But the VP, who should be our voice to the executive team, doesn't advocate for us what so ever. Such as there might not be funds to promote me, but there have been four promotions in the last month in other departments. Thanks for the advice as always guys!

Seems like your VP's heart is two sizes too small.

Got a stellar review to really add insult to injury. My boss said my skillset was way beyond the job I was hired to do and that in all his years I was his favorite person to work with. Going to live up the Christmas break (two weeks paid off :) and study a bit, then off to the races.

This happened to me as well, and what made it all the more confusing is it was when the economic bottom was falling out circa 2008 and my upper mgmt pointed to budget crisis but other departments still have cashflow?! This was all in IT mind you.

My solution was to jump ship and nobody blamed me...they were apologetic as I was underpaid and they could not pay enough to keep me. Good luck and productive studies over the holidays!

Unfortunately, I must side with most here... looks like it is time to jump ship.

Been there, done that... sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith and move on to progress in your career.

They'll probably suddenly be able to accommodate your goals once you inform them that you are moving on, if my experience is any indication.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you find something that's more in-line with your career and life goals! On the bright side, I just came off of a job search myself, and if my experience is any indication, you shouldn't have a problem finding a new gig.

You're just at that point when you've outgrown the company. Your next opportunity is right around the corner and it will be twice as good as any promotion you would receive if you stay.

That sucks. i was in the same boat a few months back. however, i decided to take my talents elsewhere and got a 40% raise in the process. THe market is starting to come back right now so take advantage! And dont wait until after the holidays, start looking now!

    Good luck!

Thanks again guys for the advice and support! I have been applying at a couple of universities, but pretty sure they won't be making calls until the new year. I have been searching daily to see what's out there and what I might enjoy doing. I won't lie though, I am hoping the university gets back to me because I have my eye on two positions that pay well and would be a great learning experience. Plus, they would include full tuition remission :)

I agree. I believe the job market is pretty good for skilled IT professionals right now. I've had to turn down plenty of job offers do to my current condition.(employment)..
