Sec+ Tomorrow [PASSED: 844]
Okay, I will sit this one tomorrow (I like to take exams on Friday).
I feel well prepared (using Transcender, Tcat and TechNotes) so I hope that I can nail this one in the first attempt.
If you have any hints or good advice let me know
Regards,
Lordy

So here goes my resumee of Security+...
When I first checked about Sec+ and read about the different CompTIA certs I thought that this one would be a walk in a park. After reading some of the threads here and gathering information on the net I found out, IT'S NOT, so do not underestimate this one !
After preparing with Transcender (pretty good), the TechNotes (very good) and various PDFs I bought an international Vue voucher from GetCertify4Less. Although the bundle includes a free PDF and test questions I found them to be rather useless (that's probably why they are free) however, the voucher was an awesome deal (paid USD 200 instead of EUR 300).
The exam is pretty straight forward. The exam time is 90 minutes which is more then enough to answer the 100 questions. In non-english speaking countries (like .de) you even get an additional 30 minutes. While 100 questions will sound a lot it's not. The vast majority of the questions consist of only one senctence or question and the different answers (4, multiple choice) don't hold a lot of text either. In my particular exam I only had "multiple-choice-single-answer" questions which are probably the easist to handle. There were no multiple answers, fill-in-the-blanks or other stuff. For around 80% of the questions you should be able to pick the right answer immediately and you can also elimite all other answers. There are however a few tricky ones (which can make the pass or fail as the passing score is 83%) where you will probably be able to narrow it down to two answers.
Be aware, that the tests sometimes ask things not directly security related (like media bandwidth and the like) and make sure you completely understand at least the following topics (hands on is perfect):
- PKI, digital certificates
- Hashing and signing
- Encryption algorithms, types and keylengths
- Social Engineering and it's different forms
- Virii, Worms, Trojan Hourses and their differences
- Network topologies (where to use routers, switches, firewalls)
- Physical Security
- Backup and Disaster Recovery
- Security Terminology (Triple A, Orange Book, Risk/Vulnerability Assesment, etc.)
Well, that's all I can think about but there is more
Another note on the exam: You can move forward and backward, mark questions for review and get an answer overview before submitting. Remember that sometimes, the answer to one question is included in another question (I had at least one case), so keep your eyes open.
I wish everybody else who is going for Sec+ good luck. If you prepare well there is nothing to be afraid of. You can make it !
