IT Security Manager / IT Service Manager

Currently I am a IT service desk supervisor who will be transitioning into a service desk manager position. However I have the opportunity to transition into a IT security manager. The team is a group of analyst who provision accounts on different systems.

The environment I am currently in I have built a legacy (small one) and I am well liked and respected. However the concept of managing a access management IDM team facinates me. However, there is risk like a new environment etc. There are a lot of variables, but don't worry about those. I am just trying to focus on the road map for a IT service desk manager and the road map for an IT security manager.

Thoughts?

It sounds like you're leaning towards the IT Security position more, and if I'm being honest, it sounds like you're slightly hesitant because of change- the new environment, the "unknown" variables and such. IF I've nailed it on the head, then I wholeheartedly think you should take that position. We can adapt to change, and it's uncomfortable at first, but that's how it feels to push yourself.

Just my $.02, either one is not a bad choice.

The two jobs are not related at all outside the fact that they start with IT.

Make sure you get the true scope of what's expected of you and where your liability starts and ends. You're in the fortunate position of knowing the individuals in the teams beforehand. Make you sure you do your own research beforehand and do what you'll enjoy.

IT security isn't "a change" it's a whole different skill set.
