Free ESXi Free Backup

Helping a buddy out who works at a small shop. They have two ESXi free servers running a total of about 10 VMs. Any free (they have 0 dollars) solutions scripts? Hacks anything you would recommend.
Their current system is the guy logs in every Monday morning and manually copies the VMDKs to a local SATA disk they plugged in. And the VMs themselves run NTbackup nightly on their own via a script to a CIFS mount.

Free virtual machine backup - Veeam Backup
Even the free version can be used to back up larger environments. -

Even though Veeam is free, you still need to have a paid version of vSphere for the vStorage APIs.
