noob with book questions

mikesprangermikespranger Member Posts: 54 ■■□□□□□□□□
i have been at this for about a month, studying for ccent and eventually the ccna. no IT background. bought the groupon deal from it university and just finished the ccent section yesterday. bought a book by walker on ebay today, waiting for that and had a few questions about other books.

i see a lot of people recommending the books by odom, and they say that its better to buy the 2nd edition than the 3rd edition. my local library has the 1st edition. would it be worth it to buy the 2nd edition off ebay for 25-30 bucks or will the 1st edition be good enough if the cd isnt too scratched up? it's dated 2004 I believe.

also - anybody try the ccent study guide by walker(s)?

Hi, sorry, its not answer to your question as I am new too, I would like to know what is your feedback on ITUNIVERSITY from groupon? do they give you complete access to their material (6000$+) ? and how about simulation videos, do they looks like real labs?

    I am considering too, thanks.

People recommend the 2nd edition over the 3rd of the Odom? Why?

the 2nd edition contains simulated labs and/or test questions i believe.

the it university thing is a good deal for the $99 i think, although i have nothing to compare it to. i just finished the ccent portion. there's a lot of powerpoint type slides and there are labs, but you are still just watching and listening as the instructor does the labs. he definitely knows his stuff

i was thinking that the groupon covered 3k worth of stuff, but its hard for me to imagine anyone paying that much. it has 5 modules, ccent, ccna, then voice, security and ccnp i think, but you only get access for a year, and there's no way i'll get that far in a year. i kinda figure they will try to sell me some sort of renewal when it expires.

There were some mistakes in the 2nd edition, I believe. I think there was some additional information added to some chapters. Though, I cannot remember which chapters. It's always a good idea to get the latest version of a book.

Mistakes in a Cisco press book? Why I've never heard of such a thing! /sarcasm

The latest version is usually a good idea, but not always. There will be changes made and material added or deleted. Best check the contents and reviews before purchasing.

I remember someone posting a typo error of Odom's 3rd ed. But I haven't seen it personally, I'll get my hands on it prolly January next year.

    Here's the thread though: http://www.techexams.net/forums/ccna-ccent/84503-possible-typo-chapter-12-ccent-ccna-icnd1-official-cert-guide-3rd-edition.html

yes, it will be fine and actually i am uing the author previous to odom for cisco press by the name of steve mcquerry and using his icnd2 self study guide and it better then current 2/3rd ed by odom as far as icnd2 goes, imo. it is copyright 2008 but has everything for current icnd2 exam and he explains a lot better and more concise. whatever he leaves out is covered by just looking at current book online or other sources..

because they are trying to sell it as a new edition without making ANY changes or difference in quality. by the same token, the previous author oc Cisco Press was better and his name was Stephen Mcquerry and i am using his stuff which is like 600 pages less then Odom's ICND2 book but explained faster and better, imo in terms of an introductory student but still wanting to pass the exam.. If I had to explain why I find Mcquerry better then odom, its' just that because he explaining it faster but better and shooting straight without any fluff, the tone is just friendlier!
