I am preparing during one mounth before take the Exam. I really don't know why some people are thinking that we need a real router in order to pass the exams. I think that we need just right books stuff and sims, thats all.
If you have a lot money, then don't buy a Router, just buy at least two with a switch. because you need to design a WAN environment, using Frame-Relay, NAT, PAT, PPT... that the deal!!!

Im unsure what point you are trying to make but you are correct by not needing to have physical equipment to pass this exam. The point of having physical equipment is not to just pass but to also understand what happens in the background. Ill give you a couple of examples... you can ping a router and get a response back or not get a response back. If you dont get a response back... do you know why? A sim does not have all the appropriate debug statements... I heard BOSON is working on it but not perfected for a larger environment sim. But, a real router... you can turn on debugging and see the ping statements get out of the first router... and you can see it hit the second router... but you dont see it get out of the second router back to the original router. These real-time debug statements help you understand what is behind routing... and make you a better trouble-shooter than someone who just passed the exam.
That is why it is a recommendation to get physical routers instead of simulation. But, I understand that not everyone can afford it bc they can get expensive.
Another basic example is if you do get a job with networking and your boss asks you to replace the memory or hardware components... not all of these items are self explanatory. So the hands on is always nice."To realize one's destiny is a person's only obligation." -
