The One Thing About Linux That Drives Me Nuts Lately

petedudepetedude Member Posts: 1,510
I have to keep apps open to copy via the clipboard. In that other all-too-common-desktop-OS, I can copy to clipboard and the data stays "persistent" until it is overwritten.

Or maybe there's some setting I need to tweak. Thoughts?

What distribution are you running? Works fine for me on Ubuntu.

I believe I've ran into that issue with some distro, most likely fedora. It seems to be working fine right now in CentOS and Slackware. I never really did look into why it did that.

Edit: Could also be a gnome 3 thing. Not sure what you're using.

It's either a GUI or an app-vs-app thing. I've seen some software that doesn't "share" text outside it's own windows/tabs, even though you go through the standard motions.

Might be an app-to-app thing, then.

This usually happens to me when trying to paste to/from AbiWord or LibreOffice Writer to Google Chrome.

It's been this way in Mint, OpenSUSE and if I remember right, even in Ubuntu. I think the same thing happens pasting into Firefox, too.

My automatic Windows habit is to close apps I'm not using or going to use, so the acquired habit is to copy from the word processor, then close the window before pasting into the browser. I tend to say "argh" a lot with Linux, though, as the clipboard has forgotten what I put therein, and I end up having to reopen the word processor.

You'll start saying argh a lot less when you use vim a lot more.
