No idea how or where to start to setup a lab

I have read all the different post and I have no clue where to start to setup a lab. I have considered buying a server off of Amazon or eBay but I am not sure if that would be my best option. I am super confused please help!

I would consider installing a VM solution and loading all your server OS's and clients OS's on the VM. No need to spend a ton of money on a physical server.
