ISP to LAN - How to?

Hello, Does anyone can explain me how internet connection comes from the ISP to our LAN. Is it Modem -> Circuit -> Router -> Switch. What does exactly Modem and Circuit does. I am talking about Internet connection for business users.
It will be great if someone can explain it.

the function of a modem is to control rate at which data move into a local network. also provides a clocking signal to the router. modem is DCE.
