Role of sub-interfaces

What is the role of a sub-interface?
Say we are configuring OSPF on a router.
Then we have fa 0/0.1 or fa 0/0.2.
What are those for? Why can't we just use regular interfaces?

earweed Member Posts: 5,192 ■■■■■■■■■□If configuring router on a stick sub-interfaces are used. I hadn't heard of them or used them until configuring ROAS.No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.
