backing up ESXi 5.1

I am running the free version of ESXi 5.1 booted off of a USB. How can i backup the configuration and/or VMs so that if something happens i dont have to reconfigure everything?

I saw Veeam but noticed they dont support the free version of ESXi.

I thought Veeam free edition would work with free standalone ESXi. Never tried it in that scenario.

There used to be a script called ghettoVCB out there, but I'm not sure if it was ever updated to support newer builds of ESXi.

Veeam (even the free edition) uses the vStorage APIs, specifically Changed Block Tracking, which isn't enabled in the free ESXi hypervisor.

ghettoVCB should work for you though. VMware Communities: ghettoVCB.sh - Free alternative for backing up VM's for ESX(i) 3.5, 4.x & 5.x It is a script that can be set up as a cron job to run automatically.

Does this back up the host configuration as well or just the VMs?

You may want to look into this tool. Haven't tried it yet but it has been in my to-do list for some time now.
