RIP Question regarding multiple routes for the same network.
JoeBirds
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if if a router running RIP recieves 2 advertisements about the same destination network from 2 different routers, it will use only the route with the lowest hop count and ignore the other until the shortest hop route goes down (for whatever reason). So what does a router do it if receives 2 advertisements from 2 different routers which lists the same hop count? I assume it just puts both routes in its routing table but not sure.

When there are equal cost paths a router will choose to load balance.

However... I know the default for RIPv2 is 4, I think RIPv1 is the same, but not 100%

You rock! Thank you very much. So there can only be 4 routes per routing table that go to the same network?
DANMOH009
4 is default, i think rip allows up to 6. You may need to do a bit of research as each routing protocol have different parameters.
I'd recommend labbing the rip set up with PT or GNS if you use it, i always find that helps you remember.
(again im not 100% on RIPv1, im hoping someone will jump in on this thread and clarify
)
