cabling from computer to a router

aren't these not similar devices? why is it cross over? i thought cross over was for router to router, switch to switch

    Think of it as two groups. In one group you have routers, PCs, access points, and network printers. In another group you have hubs and switches. To go between the two groups you need a straight through cable. Any connection within those two groups need a cross over cable.

    More to your question, both routers and a computers NIC transmit data on cables 1 and 2, and they both receive data on 3 and 6. That is why a xover cable is needed.
