Passed CCENT!

NytrocideNytrocide Member Posts: 225
I finally got off my ass and passed the CCENT (640-822 version) exam this weekend!

Bit of advice...schedule your exam. I put it off for months being nervous I wasn't ready yet, but scheduled it anyway. I failed the first time by a few questions, but from the results sheet I was able to see where I stood and it also got me back in "certification mode" 100% and I bounced back two weeks later and passed it! I used...

Lammle's CCNA book
Odom's CCENT book
CCENT for Dummies
Boson Ex-Sim/Net-Sim
CBT Nuggets - CCENT
SubnettingQuestions.com

...now on to CCNA! :D
Goals for 2014: CCNA: Voice / CCNA: Security

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

Congrats on the pass!!! Quick question for you. I am going after the ICND2 at the latter part of July/Early August. I am tempted to purchase the Boson Ex-Sim/Net-Sim for practice exams. I wanted to ask your take on the quality of the practice exams from them......in particular the simulation questions and scenario questions. Are they somewhat similar in style to the actual test? Congrats again.

Congratz. What would you recommend to study for CCENT? I'm been using testout.com, subnettingquestions.com, ipexpert.com, Cisco Press ICND1,

I currently have x1 1841 router and x2 2950s. I've been using these two lab with ,but what else should I be doing and nailing it down to?

Congratulations! I too am curious how you felt Boson exSim helped (or didn't help) you with your pass. I am taking the test tomorrow morning and I'm fairly nervous. I took two Boson tests, narrowly failed one and narrowly passed the other, and I'm trying to gauge how prepared/unprepared that makes me for the real deal. Did you find Boson harder, easier, or about the same?

Good luck on the ICND2! I hope to join you on those studies tomorrow.

Good luck on the exam tomorrow. If I can give some advice, keep your eye on the clock, first of all. Secondly, understand that the simulation questions count for more points. There are usually several tasks involved, but Cisco certs are the only ones that I know of that actually give partial credit. So even if you don't solve the entire simulation you can get some points. But if you go more than 10 minutes on a simulation question, try your best, but I suggest moving onto other questions. You can simply run out of time. Not trying to scare you, but hoping this helps you prepare. Good luck again.

I appreciate that, Rodzilla. I actually didn't know that the sims were partial credit. I feel like Boson prepared me to go quickly, because there were more questions under the same time constraint, but I also think Boson had less sims (Exam B only had two, I think). So it probably balances out.

How well do you think the CCENT for Dummies book prepared you?
And how would you compare the three books you used?

I also have all 3 books - finished the CCENT for Dummies book and thought it was a great read. In the middle of the Todd Lammle book now and trying to figure out whether or not it's necessary to do the additional reading or whether I should just start reviewing and doing more labbing.
    Goals for 2018:
Certs: RHCSA, LFCS: Ubuntu, CNCF CKA, CNCF CKAD | AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Solutions Architect Pro, AWS Certified Security Specialist, GCP Professional Cloud Architect
Learn: Terraform, Kubernetes, Prometheus & Golang | Improve: Docker, Python Programming

I can't speak on CCENT for Dummies, but I will say that if you've managed to wade through Odom cover-to-cover and understand most of it I'm not sure that a full read of Lammle is necessary. Lammle is a great, highly readable introduction to the material, and I used his books as a guide for deeper reading of specific subjects in Odom's book, which I found too dry to read cover-to-cover.

I sort of don't like Lammle's book. I feel it's great for review, and since I already read thru CCENT for Dummies I can keep up and understand everything. But the way it's written seems like it would have been extremely difficult for me to actually learn from. Too much in the book seems to assume prior knowledge and skips over explanations.

I thoroughly enjoyed the CCENT for Dummies book the best, but I feel like there were some subjects in the Lammle and Odom book that it didn't cover. I found myself mainly reading the Dummies book, but going to the Lammle and Odom books for misc. other subjects.

As far as the Boson exams, they were EXTREMELY helpful. Yeah, they're a little pricey, but the practice exam was basically the exact same setup as the test, and harder. If you can consistently pass the Boson exam, you should be able to pass the real exam. The NetSim was very helpful in drilling the Cisco IOS in my head with step by step labs in each command, and bigger labs in general. I'll probably go on and buy the CCNA Practice Exam and NetSim tomorrow morning.

I didn't use any actual hardware, but will be using my three 2950 switches, and 2610, 2611 and 2620XM routers for the CCNA.

Any other questions just let me know! Hope everyone taking it soon passes! :)

Hey I really appreciate the insights on the Boson products. I am definitely going to buy this once I ready to start practice exams for the ICND2 test. In the process of reading and processing the info first, but will be getting it. Thanks again and good luck with future certs!
