Topic for independent study

hi all,

I am doing my Masters and I was just wondering which topic to pick up for my independent study. I am very much interested in "Security". I have submitted a report on Snort (Intrusion detection system) as partial fullfilment of the curriculum.
let me know which is the hottest topic in the security field right now, which would help me in getting a good job.

What field of learning are you getting your Masters in?

My branch is Electrical focussed on VLSI. Since I cant finish my MS with even if i take all the course available in VLSI, I have started taking courses in Computer engineering field specially Networking.

Are there security concerns for processor microcode? Firm/software is filled with problems with buffer/stack/heap overflows, memory allocation and pointer errors, unvalidated data, etc. Are any problems like that in the world of microcode that can be a vulnerability to specific threats? That would make a cool project.
