Windows XP hangs when changing what user a service runs under

Has anyone ever experienced this before? I go into services.msc and change a service to run under an AD user (needs some special write permissions) rather than the local account. Click apply and it just sits there forever. I've tried locally and remotely, either way the same result. No event logs or anything to pinpoint what might be going on here.
It can't be the user because there are a dozen other machines that are using this user to run this service. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Decide what to be and go be it.

It could be having a hard time connecting to the DC to authenticate. I'd find out which DC it is authenticating on, and go from there.
