Reading CCNA at the mo, when you get to the router configuration chapters, like logging in to a router, will I need a simulator of some kind and if so, can you get the stuff free online [/b]

You will definetely want some practice, there is some sims on this site to help get your feet wet

Other than that, I havent come accross any other free sims, unless you have access to the Cisco PEC site, which would require you to be either a CIsco employee, or a gold partner reseller/Channel Partner with Cisco

As far as buying SIMS, Boson NetSim has the most functionality, and a fair amount of bugs, Net Visualizer has less functionlaity and more bugs, and there starting to head down the "cheater" way as a company with some of there products (or so I have heard).

There is no substitue for having gear though, for less than 300 smackers you could build up enough to cover routing and a portion of the switching (2 2501's and a 1900 EN switch)
