Creating and then trouble-shooting a broadcast storm

I ran into a broadcast storm when helping a client remotely and it got me to thinking; how would I go about creating a broadcast storm in my test environment and then how would I go about trouble-shooting the issue?
Pinging, traceroute, and telnet were useless as the network was saturated with broadcast messages. The only thing I could do is use tshark to watch network traffic.
Any suggestions on how to build my test lab (I have three 2950's and three 2620 XMs) to simulate a work environment broadcast storm? Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot the issue remotely?
Thank you in advance,
