A loopback interface is a logical interface with no real hardware associated with it, and it does not physically connect to a network. It is often used for testing purposes.

In addition, a loopback interface can be used as an IP interface that is always up and reachable. Because of this property, the IP address of a loopback interface is suitable to be used as the identifier of the router. For example, OSPF uses the highest IP address assigned to a loopback interface as the router's Router ID (RID).
