Job dilemma

I have a bit of a dilemma:

I currently work as a govt contractor on a bloated 25.00/hr salary doing Helpdesk support. It's mind-numbingly boring and easy.

I have a private company offering a NOC specialist job which pretty much matches my dream job description for my next move since I want to be in networking, eventually up from there. Problem is that this position offers 18/hr

I live in a high cost of living area, Southern California.

Any input from you guys on this who are further along in your careers? Thanks!

IF you have no children I would take it.
One reason I stayed at my old job so long was because I was making good money. NOw I am paying for it now. Been laid off for a year doing odd jobs to make ends meet. Hopefully I will get permanant employment soon now that I have my CCNA.

Do you get any benefits at your job now? Make sure to count everything like insurance, training, etc. Also if its just the money then if no family go for it. If I didn't have a family to support I would take a chance at a job I think I would like instead of waiting on a job that will give me everything I want and need.

Have you tried making a counter offer? "The NOC position with your company is exactly what I am looking for as far as an opportunity and I strongly believe this opportunity will be a good fit for both of us. The problem is that 18/hr is below what I currently make, would you be willing to raise your offer closer to $x/hr?"

There's no way I would take a pay cut that substantial. Stay at your current job and keep looking for a new job that isn't going to low-ball you. In the meantime, keep working on your certs, degree, etc in order to increase your value to prospective employers.

I would stay given the hit in pay you would take.

Sure it's boring, but it is easy and pays well. Look for other jobs during your down time or make a counter offer to that private company.
