Hi all,
Background
So, here I am six years down the line from when I passed my A+, I spent four/five of those years working on a first line service desk in the UK, I was seconded into project work and successfully delivered my first project, on-job 'project management' training was provided, after eight months work I delivered a Moxie 'Spaces' Global IT Knowledgebase, I was then moved into an assignment role and currently tasked with refurbishing our 'Global Infrastructure Portal' basically this is a SharePoint (MOSS 2007) collective of eight sites, for those in the know about SP it sounds grander than it actually is but still has it's challenges.
Where now?
Ok, so now I feel stuck, I am enjoying being tasked with all these different opportunities (and I have learnt a heck of a lot other than a service desk role) I feel the need to progress, although at 57 (I came into IT a bit late ) I still have the desire to learn more and want to delve deeper into SharePoint and need some advice on the role options so I can figure out which one might be best for me, my current employer offers no official training opportunities so I will have to cover any costs and use vacation to attend any schools.
Any help and advice on roles and courses will be gratefully received.
John

RobertKaucher Member Posts: 4,299 ■■■■■■■■■■SharePoint really offers you a very wide variety of paths that you can go down. And even more interestingly these paths can be converged. What I mean is that while you might be primarily a systems admin while doing SharePoint you might also have the chance to develop your web development skills with JavaScript or C#.
The very first thing I would suggest is a PluralSight membership. They have 66 courses on SharePoint and as they bring the material online from their acquisition of TrainSignal, that is only going to grow. They also have a large number of courses on things like SQL Server and PowerShell which are also very important for anyone who is learning SharePoint. Along with that there are lots of courses on JavaScript and web development, so if you wanted to go along the developer path as well, you have that option. Their memberships start at $29 US a month. I am primarily a developer. But I started as a sys admin. The training that I got from PluralSight has really enabled me to succeed in my current role. So I always try to recommend their service when I can.

Here is some more information regarding the TrainSignal material. A bunch of the virtualization videos have already been added to the library.TrainSignal Integration FAQ
Here is another resource for SharePoint and other MS technologies (free ebooks)
