If you don't pass the test, are you out the money you paid for the test? Do you have to keep paying each time?

    Yes.

    So, depending on one's motive for testing, it may be best to be certain you meet CompTIA's recommended candidate profile.

    If you are a bit more 'gutsy' give it a try and consider it an investment in your experience as an IT professional.
