Exp.Engineers, how do you to actively monitor the network?

in CCNA & CCENT
After I have setup a WAN/LAN correctly and everything is running smoothly, what do you recommend for monitoring and troubleshooting? Besides Debug and the various show commands, what do you do to ensure your network is healthy, as opposed to waiting and getting that dreaded 'is there something wrong with the network' call? Also any tips for troubelshooting?
I just recently earned my CCNA so I have the foundation, but I'd like to hear some real life experience beyond the text books and home labs.
