70-462: SQL-CORE confusion

I am doing the lessons in the book, all very new stuff, and I have gotten all the way to Chapter 1:Lesson 2! I cannot seem to connect to SQL-CORE in the SQL-A SSMS. I believe I have done everything right to this point, have not gotten any errors or anything strange at least. I am completely unfamiliar with server core, so I am not certain if SQL is properly installed or running on it, so I guess that is where I need to start, but I am having difficulty figuring out how. So, to begin, how do I see if I properly installed SQL Server 2012 in SQL-CORE, how do I see if it is running, how do I get it running? Thank you so much.

Okay, I tried to install 2012 on the CORE again, and it appears to be loading now, so I think I may have actually not successfully done that.
