How long do you have to stay in help-desk?

Just curious how long do you have to stay in Help-Desk to start moving into higher position such as Sys admin position or Network Admin positions?
So just want to know the standard period to work in the Help-Desk and how long it took you to move up into higher positions?

1 year and 7 months for me. I spent the 1 year at helpdesk A then moved to helpdesk B for economic betterment and was promoted after 7 months to Systems Admin.Currently reading: Network Warrior, Unix Network Programming by Richard Stevens -

Only until someone will give you a better opportunity. Might be a couple months for someone motivated and might be years for another. Just work hard and show you have the skill to move up.An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made. -

Right now I'm at 1 year 7 months and have been job searching some. Hope for the next step soon! (not that I dislike my current job - just need a good bump)
