Degree

Everyone, I will advise on getting a BS degree. It opened so many more doors for me. All these people on this forum that say it is not needed DO NOT HAVE A DEGREE. It really does help and you can leap over most applications that dont have it. Just my advise.

Degree vs no degree, degree will always beat no degree, no doubt about that. So if you have the opportunity it's always beneficial to have a degree. Degree vs 4 years of hands on experience, experience trumps degree. I have a degree and it got me nowhere, because I didn't have any experience. And there are no prestigious or crap universities where I come from, national universities are all on par here. So much about college education... I am just saying it didn't work for me as I hoped it would. icon_sad.gif

What opportunity came up after you added your degree to your resume?
How big of a jump did you make?

While I agree that in actual skills, 4 years of hands on in most cases gives you more than the degree, there are lots of places that filter their resumes by degree vs. no degree. It's hard to qualify that the degree got you nowhere because now that you have it you can check the box on every future application for the rest of your life that says "4 year degree" and it can't be held against you.

I think having a degree helps accelerate the climb a little bit quicker for most people. It's not going to be equal to experience, but it will potentially open up some doors and look very nice on your resume in combination with experience.

Wow We are going to debate this forever.

My last post this quarter on this subject. Its a tool. It can be a cheap tool, or a tool of the highest quality, but we all have to have something inside of US to make the most of it. Some people can build a house with a screwdriver and hammer, while others can have an entire construction crew and can't even lay the foundation. Its all up to you to make the most of the opportunities that come in front of you, and if that includes higher education then go for it if you feel its of value to you. One is not better(talking certs in this case) than the other in the hands of each man or woman. Its just a matter of how your going to use it.

Ok I'm done ranting about this for a while.

I have X3 my salery since I received my BS degree. I am not saying experience is not good but companys will interview people with 4 year degrees more that experienced applicants.

If you have the chance to get one do it. It will open doors much easier.

To me a 4 year degree shows you are dedicated to something. A cert shows you understand something.

Can you make it without one. Yes, but with one it will be much easier to get your foot in the door.I I tell people also of you are going into IT please if you can get a cert or 2 before you graduate. If you take all the Cisco courses, take the cert.

Even if you can get an associates though do it.
