RSTP on 200-101??!

Theres no RSTP coverage in Odom's ICND2 book. There is literally 1 sentence on it, simply spelling out what the acronym stands for and stating its IEEE standardization # of 802.1w. He seems to skip over it purposefully.

However, the 200-101 objectives do include RSTP. Probably no config of RSTP, but at least identification and possibly more.

My test is scheduled for a week from now. I'm starting to realize just how little I know and the amount of review I have ahead of me seems daunting. Can anyone give advice on how much I should study RSTP?
Goals for 2018:
Certs: RHCSA, LFCS: Ubuntu, CNCF CKA, CNCF CKAD | AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Solutions Architect Pro, AWS Certified Security Specialist, GCP Professional Cloud Architect
Learn: Terraform, Kubernetes, Prometheus & Golang | Improve: Docker, Python Programming
To-do | In Progress | Completed

You definitely need to know RSTP. Make sure you know what it is, the different roles and states and most importantly what it offers compared to STP.

I took the exam last weekend and there were a few questions on there, don't know why Odom didn't elaborate the topic further.

I believe Todd Lammles book on ICND 1 has info on RSTP, basically there was the original STP that was 802.1d and that had a bit slower convergance. So they worked on it and released RSTP (R for Rapid) and dubbed it 802.1w. So if you know d comes before w then you know d is old and w is the new hottness. But you should read some on what it does, when it does it, and why it would kick in.

I agree you need to know RSTP and remember when Cisco talks about STP in general they refer to Per-VLAN RSTP

That's what Odom gets at, he says something like 'this book mostly covers PSVT+ because its the default on most switches'. From ICND1 there were some things Odom didn't cover in depth, I have learnt, so I'm keeping my eye open this time. You did the right thing looking at the objectives, its fairly clear what he doesn't cover enough then you can go and research it independently.

In the netacad course they have one section for PSVT+ and another for Rapid PSVT+ so they seem to be giving them equal weight. I would guess questions would be about the differences between the two. Or possibly to configure one or the other.

They seem to skip over RSTP after introducing it.

Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) or IEEE 802.1w - This is an evolution of STP that provides faster convergence than STP.

RSTP (or IEEE 802.1w) - An evolution of spanning tree that provides faster convergence than the original 802.1D implementation. This version addresses many convergence issues, but because it still provides a single instance of STP, it does not address the suboptimal traffic flow issues. To support that faster convergence, the CPU usage and memory requirements of this version are slightly higher than those of CST, but less than those of RSTP+.

    Good Luck!

Actually the CBT Nugget on STP Enhancements covers it a bit. The Alternate port and how fast it converges. It is very difficult to know how in depth it will be covered, I'd imagine I'll have a better idea of how deep the knowledge needs to be once I hit the Boson practice exams lol.
