i've recently graduated from a private technical college, and in getting voucher for 70-270, the finanacial aids officer set me up for 72-270 exam. is there a 72-270, and what(if any) differences between the two?

are you sure you have the number correct as far as i can see on the following page http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcpexams/prepare/examresults.aspx?orderby=ID there is no 72-270 are you sure you don't mean 70-272

The 72 series exams are offered only by AATC (Authorized Academic Training Centers). There is no difference in the exam content, just the price. For example, instead of the regular $125 retail price for XP, it's only $60 via AATC's.
70-272 is an entirely different exam. MCDST.
So to answer your question, yes you are fine, and yes you are registered for the correct exam. When you take 70-290 it will also show up as 72-290 (considering you take it through the same organization).
