Do I have enough experience to land a Telecommuting job?

WilliamWrightWilliamWright Member Posts: 29 ■□□□□□□□□□
I live in the city of Chicago, and I have to commute 2 Hours by Public transportation to my current Job, as a Redbox Machine Support Specialist, I've been here for 4 months and I'm getting sick of it. I was wondering about trying to get a Telecommute job, but not sure if an employer would hire me for that spot,

I've worked Helpdesk right out of High School for 2 Years, done 4 HP Contracting Job, and now I'm a remote Kiosk technician for Redbox Dvd.
Or better yet, what would an employer need to see to feel confident enough to hire one to work from home?

I have my own apartment, I live alone, and I have a nice computer.

Way too many variables to give you a solid answer. Lower level support positions are not usually work from home types though unless you do some type of contracted online support stuff.

I don't know any off the top of my head, but there have been some recent discussion here you could find with a search. I'm sure someone will chime in with some more specific examples as well eventually.

Is getting a job closer where you have to go in an option?

Companies still outsource IT people in India for that type of work. ;) Usually telecommuting positions are provided to seasoned employees who have justified a need to work from home. And probably, it is not for the whole week but for 2 to 3 days of the week. I have friends who work in human resources and administrative assistants who have that luxury. The company has to have a VPN network so they employees can reach their services on their internal network.

I am from New York City and currently active duty military and have worked outside in extreme cold weather. I suggest that you build IT experience and search for a firm in which you can work for a company indoors to provide IT support.

    Good luck.

support.com is hiring for "Remote Services Technician"

Be aware that you gear needs to be up to their requirements (net speed and PC specs), and they will run a test on your equipment when you apply. I didn't realize that, and I think I hurt myself because I was using a slow net connection on my laptop which is 5 yrs. old.

Just wondering has anyone else experienced this situation, and still manage to get hired with them?
