How to go about asking for a promotion?

So long story short I am looking to talk to my boss about a promotion. I think where the company has grown to, my continued education (certs and degree) and the level of my involvement in it all warrants a new title. Right now I am a Net Admin but its so broad I want something more specific on my resume for the future. I am thinking something along the lines of Virtualization and Storage Administrator or something close since its what I do. Now I am starting to do a lot of project management as well so that comes in to place also.
So I guess my question is has anyone here done this, how did you combat the nervousness and did you get what you asked for. I have discussed it with my boss in September and he didnt say no but we didnt talk much else about it.
Thanks all.

When you approach your boss, go well planned. Have the facts on paper of your improvements and your outstanding performances. I know nervousness is tough to combat, your boss should know and understand that. Just be confident. If your boss sees confidence and willingness to do more, that is half the battle. Again, just have facts on paper. If you feel that you've excelled in the department you're in and there's no real challenges for you, explain that.
Again, if and when employees come to me, that is what i look for. My .02. Goodluck -

If your a hard worker it shouldn't be a problem for you to bring the subject up. Schedule a meeting with your boss and let him/her know in advance that you would like to discuss your career advancement with the company. Compile a list of your progress throughout the years or memorize it. When you meet with your boss remain humble and respectful.
I told myself the worst thing that could happen is that they say "No". If they react rudely or say "No" this just let's me know about the company I'm working for and helps me plan better for my future. Yes, you are an employee but you are also providing them with a service. Confidence is key. If there normal at all they have probably been in the same position, had employees ask before and should be understanding. Good luck to you man! -

I personally have never directly asked for a raise or promotion in my career. Not for any particular reason, but it's just not my style or in my personality. I've always danced around the question and instead had discussions around my career aspirations and goals. A good manager would also be a good listener and would promote or provide raises as the business allows. -
