74-409 or MCSA first?

Just wondering if it would be better to get the 74-409 Server virtualization or MCSA first?

The Server 2012 MCSA is 3 exams; the 74-409 is one.
The 74-409 is technologies that overlay the material covered in MCSA 2012.
Have you worked with Server 2012, Hyper-V, or SCVMM?

Honestly they are separate topics for the most part that work in conjunction with each other. I think you need to figure out what your focus/goals are.

I've worked with Server 2008 in an extremely basic administrative role.

If you plan on using the free voucher for the 74-409 then the 409 is probably your only option since it expires on June 30th. The MSCA will take you months to finish.

On the other hand, if you don't plan on using the free voucher then the MCSA will be a good prereq for the 74-409. As mentioned above, if you haven't done any Hyper-V and SCVMM, you'll be a little lost.

I completed my MCSE 2012 a couple of months ago and currently working on the 74-409. I'm finding a lot of the things I studied in my MSCE in the 74-409 objectives.

If you have the free voucher for the 74-409 then I would take that first. It will give you a great foundation to setup and nice lab to continue your studies.
