A little feedback please

I am studying currently for the A+ and plan to take the test at the end of May. I have no hired work related experience in IT or computers, although for approx. 5 years I repair computers part time, some hardware when needed and windows operating system troubleshooting and reinstalling where needed. I guess I want to verify, will I need to prove experience to obtain this certification? Or is passing the test all that is needed? Also, should I go ahead and study networking while I have committed to these weeks of study?
