When doing console connection how do you know which com port to set in whatever program you are using? I can do it via trial and error but possibly there is a quick way?

Check device manager.

What OS are you using, in windows, in device manager, under com ports it tells you what port number is assigned to each com port I have an 8 port card in my computer and I just went through and labeled each port with a piece of tape wrapped around the port cable.
