A place willing to send me to training to realize what I bring to the table is valuable and they want to invest in me to keep it up to date and not just when the vendor gives free hand outs.
I will find this place. -

I thrive in high-pressure environments and love working against the odds, so that probably adds to it. -

I would say that my current job is near perfect. I could use more money but it is the best work environment since the beginning of my career 10 yrs ago.
I have two different ideas on what would be great.....
1) work from home type job that is 3 days per week.
2) Or a CIO/CISO/CSO job where I get paid $$$$ and only do it for 3 yrs and then retire. -

PC509 Member Posts: 804 ■■■■■■□□□□IT Operations Manager for a SMB. Enough to still be hands on, but manage the department. Good pay, wide variety of things to do, still have fun with the technical stuff. Work with the security aspect, but still be able to play with the new laptops and servers when needed.
The business would be located at the Oregon coast. So, that way I could live in a nice ocean front condo. And, a nice home office so I could work from home a couple days a week. -
OctalDump Member Posts: 1,722Anthony Bourdain style.
Have you seen the documentary on how he landed in that? He had a severely misspent youth, hard drugs, borrowing money to get by, difficult relationship with his parents. Basically "did everything wrong", writes a book, and then he ends up with this job where he travels around and eats exotic food, choosing where to go and what to eat.
Kind of gives me hope that maybe I'll luck into something awesome.2017 Goals - Something Cisco, Something Linux, Agile PM -

OctalDump Member Posts: 1,722I'm in an odd situation. Currently, the job that best fits my qualifications/experience doesn't hold a lot of appeal.
Where I'd like to end up (in IT) is somewhere where I do IT strategy and governance, so a senior management or C level role. I like the blue sky stuff, and plotting a course. But I don't feel adequately qualified for that yet, although I am working in that direction.
There's a lot of other stuff, though, too. I'd like to be able to live near a beach (and my family), work with smart people who can support my professional development (mentoring, training, further education etc), work somewhere that values excellence, a good work/life balance with genuine flexibility for employees, respect for my professional status, genuinely collaborative environment that's not driven by personal ego, no crazy people (no workplace sociopaths or personality disorders), work mostly with a small, tight-knit team, relaxed, fairly paid (or if it's unfair pay for it to be unfair in my favour), and probably somewhere that shares a lot of my biases. I think I'd probably prefer a smaller organisation, since maybe the politics would be a bit more manageable.2017 Goals - Something Cisco, Something Linux, Agile PM -

Chinook Member Posts: 206@OctalDump. Read Bourdain's book Kitchen Confidential. It's a really interesting look into what goes on in the kitchen of a restaurant.
I have real respect for Bourdain. I like his TV shows, but I like his attitude more. He is outspoken and doesn't seem to care what other people think of him. I follow him on Twitter. He's the "Lemmy (Lemmy from Motorhead) of the culinary world. And yeah, he was a drug addict (hard drugs) and a pretty destitute guy at one point.
I'm not sure what my dream job would be, but in the first 6 months it would include me traveling the world & sleep in EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. And a smart phone without any email. -

Overall? Restore power cars from the 80s and 90s, drive them hard for a bit and then resell. Need more room and bankroll to do this though! It's my retirement plan. -

In IT/security, the job I'm doing now is one of the best jobs I've ever had. Only took 25 years to get here... -

Regarding the IT industry, I would like a red teaming job that is more than just penetration testing. Something that would involve the whole panoply of physical break-ins, adversary simulation, working with (and learning from) the military. Something along the lines of what's described in the article below:
