So I really mess up. I left the helpdesk job cold turkey and just drove home. And then a few days later I email hr and they accepted my resignation. Now question is, am I blacklisted from all helpdesk job, for what i had done? Can I ever work in helpdesk again?

Now it is up to you to decide whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. I think most would consider it a blessing...I'm not allowed to say what my previous occupation was, but let's just say it rhymes with architect.

Short answer, no, there is no global blacklist of helpdesk jobs. You likely can't work at that company again, and now you have to find a job while explaining why you don't have one, which is more difficult. -

This response makes me wonder...
I've quit without another job lined up, butttt I also gave them a 2 weeks notice and was going on other interviews at the time.
Like Danielm7 said, you better come up with a very good reason on why you quit to tell other companies. Of course if you weren't there for very long (like 2 months or less) I would just leave it off the resume completely. -
faintingheart Member Posts: 256NetworkNewb it was less then a month. Thanks for the advice I would leave off myh resume.

scaredoftests Mod Posts: 2,780 ModDo you have any knowledge of networking? If so, you can try to find any jr. network admin positions, apply and see if you get any bites. Otherwise, work a year at helpdesk.Never let your fear decide your fate....

Nope I don't have any real world pratical network skills. I think I should work at helpdesk for a year. -
scaredoftests Mod Posts: 2,780 ModNo college? No internship? Why did you quit then? You better make up your mind if you are going to stick with a job.Never let your fear decide your fate....

Sounds pretty legit to me... :]
Where do you live?
Out in the middle of nowhere? Was that the reason you had to settle for such a long commute?
If so... maybe you need to move closer to a big city. -
UnixGuy Mod Posts: 4,570 ModHow old are you?
Do you want a career in IT or is just a temporary job
if it's just a temp job, you're not screwed, just tick it off your resume (and don't do it again)
if you want to make a career out of IT, do the same thing
you are not a 'screw'. -
Basic85 Member Posts: 189 ■■■□□□□□□□What kind of helpdesk job was it? call center? and you've been there a month, just leave it off your resume and pretend it never happen. If it's a high turnover job than HR is probably use to people just getting up and leaving. So there's no need to explain anything to future employers.
Why did you get up and walk out? Horrible managers? hostile environment? -
Jasiono Member Posts: 896 ■■■■□□□□□□Good Lord. Good for you!
I laughed pretty hard at the first response lmfao!
Hopefully you learned a couple things here. One of them being that you most likely don't want to stay in helpdesk and move past it (up and beyond).
Second. Give notice next time :P
You most likely burned your bridge at that company, but you can apply to other companies. Leave it off your resume. -
futurehendrix Member Posts: 28 ■□□□□□□□□□I love this thread only because when I worked at help desk, I sat right across from the exit door (literally) and would fantasize about just getting up and leaving after about my fifth "reset internet explorer" call of the day.....
you, my friend, are a national hero. -

jeremywatts2005 Member Posts: 347 ■■■■□□□□□□You should never quit a job without having another one lined up or about to start. That is a big no go in tech. Highly unprofessional to walk off a job. You give a 2 week notice and suck it up if they make you work it out. What happens if someone in that company shows up at your next interview at the next company you are screwed then. It happens and I have seen it happen. It is not cool at all.

You can quit a job today, and then see/apply for a better opportunity tomorrow (because you weren't stuck at work stuck on calls all day).jeremywatts2005 wrote: »Highly unprofessional to walk off a job. If an employer can FIRE you without notice... then why can't the employee FIRE the employer without notice?? -
jeremywatts2005 Member Posts: 347 ■■■■□□□□□□Yes never you work it out so you can look for another one. Whether that is using your vacation time or breaks or something but you should never just quit. There is always a way to apply for new work. Quitting like that is something that should not be an option. If you hate it that much that early then start looking. Yes an employer can fire you without notice however you quitting without notice can get you in a mess. Seen it happen, even though it shouldn't. If it ever comes up that you worked at that business and quit without notice and leave it off your resume that could cost you. Be cautious in the future plan ahead. I always have a recruiter or someone somewhere in my network that I can go to and say hey I am looking find me work. I would work on building a large network with a lot of contacts to help you prevent this in the future. I have interviewed with people who were at the last company I was at just earlier than my time and they do talk to those folks.
