Anyone do any think other than IT?

nelnel Member Posts: 2,859 ■□□□□□□□□□
just wondering what of the usual users round here i see posting do other than IT?....Are there any car mechanics, electricians or even plumbers!

just wanted a heads up on anyother "hands on" skill sets people have. Things that people may like to do to take there mind away from IT a little

Ive always fancied learning more about my car or maybe some kind of labouring skill.

Anyone else have any input or is this going to be one of those useless threads!

I really try to learn all that I can and experience what life can offer. Of course I don't have careers in any of these things.

I was an electrician for 12 years. Currently wiring our new church on weekends. It will seat about 400 people and has a balcony and 2 living areas (mini apartments-like).

However, for real fun I like to collect and shoot guns, especially handguns like the Springfield 1911 you see as my avatar. :D

    Hi

Cant quite top spymarks pistol wippin antics but here goes anyway icon_lol.gif

Golf when i was much younger dont have time now cos of kids icon_sad.gif . Enjoy painting and decorating and everything DIY. Car enthusiast although i only have a 1.3 Ford Fiesta hence avatar.

When i decide to leave IT for another career, dont see myslef under desks plugging in RJ45's when ime 55 honestly, it will most likely be outdoor doing something creative, have no idea yet but am sure i will think of something.

Eating loads of junk food and then having to spend hours in the gym to burn it off, drinking loads of beer and yeah same again in the gym to burn it off.

3 small kids aged 0 1 & 2, keep me occupied when i get home from work till they are in bed.

Then if i have any energy left i spend some time on my website making sure its up to date.

    Strewth....

I ws an electrician for about 2 years also. I graduated with a degree in EE, and was getting job offers for 27-30k a year, found out through a friend that an EE can sit for the exam to get an electrician's license without the usual 2 year work requirement. This is how I made the jump back into IT because about 50% of my business was installing data cable, and I was talking to different people and seeing how much money they were making at the time caused me to get into IT.

I sitll do a lot of tradework, I built my own house (3 years of weekends spent on that one) and for the last 6 months or so have been learning to rope climb trees and do arborist type work (for fun). I used to live in Michigan and I was into firearms as well, but I now live in NJ and the laws are far more restrictive about what you own (but I still have 31 firearms in my collection, mostly 50+ years old).
The only easy day was yesterday!

    Hi,
Outside of working and studying for certs ? That doesnt leave much time ! :D

Ok so 2 young kids here, 1.5 and 3 months, keeping me pretty busy. I also like woodworking, I have a small shop set up in the basement.

3.5 years ago I actually build the house we're leaving in. Its not quite finished yet, so i usually put some hours into that on weekends. (But I think its never quite finished anyway.. icon_eek.gif )

I also have a pistol owning and shooting licence (you need that here) but I dont have time for that lately...

I think thats about it for me !

Yeah, it's real hard to tell from the small picture, but you can just barely make out the Springfield logo on the grips if you look close. Most people think it's a Kimber 1911. Colt, Springfield, Kimber, hey they're all good! icon_cool.gif

Im impressed that even people have built that own homes! that must feel like a real achievement - once you've got over the years of work anyway!

i think once ive finished my degree i will pursue other things like that - well apart from the gun slinging action!

I got into triathlons this past year. Did my first sprint last June, and full-triathlon shortly after. I am looking to do an Olympic distance next year, and hopefully do a full Ironman before I am 30.

I've been using that site and a few others as reference, and have already learned a good amount. I recently made a pumpkin spiced beer that actually tasted very nice.

Trying to take up the guitar again. Never quite got it down pat, but do know basics. Have you noticed how many musicians (or wannabe musicians) are in IT?
Also working on fiction writing. Maybe published someday.
I find the more IT cert info I study, the more I have to balance it with something non-technical.

I like to play frisbee golf on my off time. I usually take off on a Saturday afternoon. I like to grow things too. I usually have a plant somewhere. I even tried my hand at mycology and mushrooms. The legal ones of course!!! IF I had a house I would be the landscape artist on the block. icon_lol.gif

I love to hunt and fish. Big hunter and saltwater fisher here. Spent a lot of time on the coast. I also like to Spin some records on my turn tables from time to time. In highschool I was a club DJ and I traveled all over texas doing gigs and raves. I used to have all kinds of fancy DJ software and mixing studio gear. Oh yes the young and wild times!

Great thread idea by the way!

Well my father is a gun smith so i spent a large majority of my life around him and his store. I even worked for him full time for 2 years before i got my break into IT. We have a nice collection of firearms.

Only 1911 we have currently is a Colt Defender, very nice little pistol, its actually surprisingly accurate for its barrel length.

I have a few side hobbies, most already touched on. I play guitar (sort of) and have been playing around with some recording, play golf in years I am not studying for the CCIE, and am starting to get back into shooting, I just bought a used Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge shotgun, and will be shooting clays, maybe take up small game hunting again. I also spend time working with my church, including some tech stuff, and running sound. I don't play guitar there yet, I need a little more practice first :)

I would normally say you are crazy for selling that car, but for a trip to Nurburgring, I think you made the right decision!! Enjoy the trip!
Must have been some good times in that car though.
R32 gts-t is my fav nissan, that car keeps it simple and RWD. That is a drivers car!
