IT guys out of shape?

AnonymouseAnonymouse Member Posts: 509 ■■■■□□□□□□
I've noticed more often than not an IT guy is gonna have a gut unless they are scrawny. I'm a fatass but trying to do something about it since I have lots of free time nowadays since I'm only working. How about you guys?

Once I got married and started working in front of a PC all day, I went from 180 up to 225. Once I hit that mark about a year and a half ago, I was like icon_eek.gif and have slowly worked my way back down to 195.

I run three to five times a week in the mornings and watch what I eat. I usually run between 3 - 5 miles. I used to lift weights also a few times a week, but I have not really been into that much lately. Running keeps me in great shape (no ripped abs or anything, but all around good shape) and I feel a lot better on days I run. My energy level seems to be a lot higher.

Just keep in mind what ever exercise plan you choose ensure you eat right also.

I agree with networker a good diet and regular exercise is the key...

When my wife was pregnant and working with some unhealthy eaters I went from 190 to 235 in about 3 years. Since February I started eating a lot better usually 5-6 small meals a day running about 4 days a week with some lifting. I'm down to 215 and hoping to break 200 by the end of the year, business trips are what kill me. Eating and exercise habits get destroyed when I'm on the road. I don't know if it really helped me also but I drink about 10 cups of green tea a day and I feel healthier, have more energy, and they say studies show it keeps your metabolism going. So I figure it can't hurt if I keep drinking it.

You should do a search for "exercise". There have been a few really good threads. Be sure to specify the "off-topic" forum, otherwise you'll get a ton of unrelated results.

I've recently got back into weight lifting. I probably need to lose 20-30 pounds before I'd consider myself to be in awesome shape. However, I have a larger build with a decent amount of muscle, so I don't have that sloppy fat look. It'd still be nice to trim down a bit though. It's happening; slowly but surely.

5'10 at 204 lbs as of the other day. I recently got back into running (used to really be into it a few years ago) to work on getting things back under control though I've stumbled this week and last and have only made it out one day each. I'll be doing better starting next week though because the stumbling factor is now removed. I generally do a 3 mile run at 4 am every other day except Saturdays. So it usually comes out as either Sun/Tues/Thurs or Mon/Wed/Fr for the week. On the off days I generally just go out for a long walk.

I keep up on it. I haven't hit any significant weight gain yet. Biggest key is food consumption. I eat light in the mornings, moderate lunch, and a nice sized dinner every single day.

I work at 8 so I get up every morning at 6 to hit the weights for an hour then I swim laps in the pool before heading into work. One of the benefits about working for a University. I like to keep in shape instead of sitting in my chair all day.

210' @ 6'. I go to the gym and do the eliptical 5 times a week, only 30 minute workout but I burn 400 calories in doing so. I drink a ton of green tea through out the day and watch what I eat. I can't lift weights or I bulk up like the hulk in no time. I went from 180 to 230 from just lifting weights over a year period and now I have been trying to thin down ever since.

I've got bad vision and high poundage. Already stereotyped. Doesn't help that I'm Asian so people expect me to be good at math too which I'm not.

    Ballooned? That's a tiny balloon.

As for myself, I was up to 230 about a year or so ago. All through college I worked out so i kept in decent shape, but the past 4 years I didn't have a gym membership. Back in January I started a lifetime fitness and try to go 4-5 days a week. I do cardio for an hour 3 days and weight lifting the other 3 days a week. I've been trying to eat better too. 4-6 small meals a day, compared to 2-3 large meals, cutting out soda and fast food. I find it tough to constantly keep up with my diet, I think that's the hard part. I'm slowly creaping down in weight. I'm 215 now and actually have much more energy on a daily basis.

I need to lose weight. Before I started IT I was 100 pounds and now I'm 400lbs. I guess that's what you get for doing nothing but sitting on the computer eating ice cream and Doritos all day.

I've always been tall and thin. I try to motivate others to get to a healthy weight by making fun of them and calling them names.

5'11" @ 160, I have a high metabolism so I normally don't gain weight though I still do some exercise and watch what I eat.

    1) three sets of 10 push ups, 3 times a week.
    2) three sets of 100 crunches, 1-2 times a week.
    3) mountain bike to the library when I study for certifications, library is 1.5 miles away from home.

5' 6" 108lbs here... I have always tried to gain weight, but was never able to. I just have a freakishly high metabolism. I used to always do sports but haven't for years and I am horribly out of shape now. I notice it more and more when I am "vigorously exercising" with female friends that I get winded a lot sooner than I used to.

I decided to hit the gym again very recently, actually. I've been at it for about six weeks, and I have to say, I'm pretty happy with the results. I used to work at a gym, so I don't have a lack of knowledge when it comes to exercise, nutrition, and suppliments. (I guess the whole "motivation" factor was missing.) I had a pretty good routine going, partially from my "formal education" as a fitness counselor/trainer, as well as some extra-curricular reading. Lately, though, I've been bumming around the Men's Health website, picking up tips and revising both my diet and my workout plan.

While I'm still working to get into a shape I can be happy with, I'm doing a 5-day weekly schedule, usually lasting no more than 1.5 hours, (from the moment I step through the door to the time I'm showered and heading out). Each day consists of a 20-minute session on a cardio machine, another 20 minutes warming up and stretching, then weights. I've got a balanced routine, doing two muscle-groups in one session, except my legs. (I leg up about 1,400lbs., I don't exactly need more bulk there, just upkeep.) I'm also working my way through a series of 4-week routines that focuses on one area of the body or another, like strengthening my back, building up my shoulders, etc.

I guess that I'm not in the greatest of shape right now, but I'm getting there. My primary motivation is to keep my spine healthy, as well as prevent any unforseen heart-problems down the road, since my family is prone to that sort of thing. I'm also looking forward to feeling better in general, as well as heading out to the beach without a shirt on, but those are added bonuses. icon_wink.gif

As for actual stats, err, well. . . just shy of 300lbs, 6'1", right now floating at 18 - 19% bodyfat. I'm hoping to keep the weight, just exchange the bodyfat for lean muscle.

I would say its a fair guess to say more often than not, IT workers are "out of shape". Not saying they are all fat or lazy, just that it comes with the job/life style.

I'm a bit of an odd one. I do tons of cardio (I train for triathlons/marathons), but I eat like a garbage can, so I always have the weight. But I can out-bike or run all those skinny punks any day :P

I'm 5 10' and 175. I am a pro wakeboarder, so my weight goes down in the summer and my muscle tone rises extremely fast. However, winter times a hootch since its too cold here and dry land training isn't the same. But on the downside, just blew my knee and i am waiting on a prognosis from a specialist since dopign myself isn't helping.

Being in shape and exercising regularly can have advantages though on your work i've noticed. Your more focused, stay concentrated longer, less tired at the end of the day.. and your significant other may want more since your lookin good. icon_twisted.gif

Heh, that's very true. Being productive, confident, and having it show outwardly that you're feeling good has a profound effect on your work and love-life. In addition to being "asked for computer help" a whole lot more by my female coworkers and friends, my ex did enjoy the extra. . . vigor I had when I was more physically active and in better condition. icon_cool.gif

I get my exercise on between 1-3 times a week. My workout is :

    100 pushups
    100 setups
    100 flutterkicks

can do all in under 15 min

I need to start doing pull ups again and that will be 50 as session. I also need to start running and that will be 2-4 miles in the times of 16-32 min which is really really bad.
I'm going to start running at school a few times
a week and I can't wait to feel the burn in my legs icon_eek.gif
