Congrats on the post, but remember being an IT manager is not just about the technology... It's also about people management, financial management (budget planning), project management, security management, Storage Management, Energy Conservation, etc, etc, etc...

I 100 % agree. I am finding out it is all you have said. and maybe more.
look very challenging and fun but I will get my IT hands on the equipment.

yes to all these I am finding out. That is why I am looking
for some software conventions to manage these tasks. They can be
daunting if one doesn't have the right tools. believe me I know.

    financial management (budget planning)

First establish the policy and then the process after that. Initially it could be formal or informal and paper based. Tools come later and take time to be effective. Often they are not effective anyway :)

You need to focus on the main process of how you want to manage your shop. (Very much like a main idea of a paper or story). Once you develop your main process, everything you listed will find itself in a proper flow.

I think what may help you in this regard is the Eisenhower Method. I was going to get you a general wiki, but that blog might actually be great for you (if you haven't found it already). Basically, it's a tool that will help you prioritize your tasks as well as your time and you put them in quadrants that range from very important to time wasters. I think once you start prioritizing the needs of your shop, you will make an excellent IT manager!

You might want to look at these guys, seeing how you're in the finance/banking sector.

Sungard Availability Services - Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity, Managed Hosting, and Consulting Services

Yes, they are expensive, but there's a reason why. Their monthly cost is well worth the service they provide. A lot of banks & financial institutions use them. It would be worth it to at least check 'em out, get a quote & kick the tires.

you know you are right. I am finding out if the flow of the IT shop is a certain way things work themselves out. I do a lot of training with my new assistant big time and getting him up to speed on the shop really helps me out have more time for politicking ! haha but thanks for you nice comments.
It has been very hard. I wanted this job but like I mentioned my boss was fired and the president elected me to do it and I have no clue how (okay some clue) he did his job and especially for a credit union there are a lot of Fed stuff. I talk to the Federal Reserve I bet daily. but it is a new interested world that I am kind of excited about, but have to set major priorties I am starting to burn out doing 16 hours days 6 days a week for 2 months now, burn out is coming so I am forcing myself to go to the gym and spa more often need an outlet...might go to China some day in future for a vacation..but that is next year once my assistant is trained...

Stay focussed. The next 6 months are critical. After that you will either be still in that job or forced to leave. Cancel anything that does not involve being an IT Manager. Remember, the more time elapses the less slack anyone will cut you in terms of expectations of you.

Sounds like you're working hard but enjoying the challenge. Hopefully you'll get to the point in the near future that the long days wont be necessary. All I can really say is that we're all rooting for you here that you're successful at the new position.
What makes you choose China as a vacation spot? Personally I'd like to go back to Italy and perhaps Scotland so I can enjoy it there more (visited both while in the Navy) than the last time I was at these 2 places. Italy just has so much history to be taken in and Scotland I just enjoyed the people.
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

Yes, I am very familiar with that type of burn out from both a professional standpoint (from other managers, of course, I'm still trying to get sergeant stripes) and in my own fraternity when folks stepped up to be chapter president. The key thing is to take from this is that what you are feeling is normal. You are getting feelings of being overwhelmed. Once you get your priorities of your shop in order, the overwhelmingness will start subsiding. But what I have told my fraternity chapter presidents as an alumni and to other managers (friends of mine...never in my own department) is to never let ANYONE see you sweat. Once that happens, you might as well give your chips away, because you already lost that hand. As Turgon, myself and others have said, STAY FOCUSED.

Once you have your priorities set and things are looking as you like it, take a second-in-command under your wing and delegate to him/her how you want to enforce YOUR vision. You can always take suggestions, in fact the good leaders always do, but when it's time make a decision, it's the end of the conversation and folks are doing it. Remember, businesses run inside a democracy (government), but are NEVER (the good ones, anyway) run like one. The hierarchy is to be respected and observed. I am a firm believer in that. Once you have a good second-in-command that will run things the way YOU want him/her to, and not have his/her own bright ideas, then you can take those vacations to China. Right now, you're not quite there yet...but I know you will be.

And to the guy who negged me earlier for itdaddy not being "polished"...I think he's starting to find his groove and he's getting to be quite "polished."

Congrats, for the new title and for being the smartest guy in the world.

Perhaps you know the answer to this dilemma- How accurate is an IQ test for someone that is smarter than the person that developed the test? Considering that the person taking the test would be smarter than the person that wrote the test, wouldn't the person that wrote the IQ test be unqualified to assess the intelligence of someone more intelligent than them?
  • itdaddyitdaddy Member Posts: 2,089 ■■■■□□□□□□
hahhaaaahaa I was only playing about being the smartest man in the world.
    dont take me seriously.hahhhaa

I just think it is funny to say that. reminds me of a story when I was in the military. here is the story. It still makes me laugh.

    My Story:
I joined the United States Air Force in 1986. I was in 10 years active duty Air Force. I was an AGE mechanic. We worked on many systems: hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, some electronic, all kinds of goodies.

But during my schooling years before the AGE work I was in school with this guy name Cully! Cully and I were in competition. He would always one up me on the written exams but I would smoke him on the hands on portion of exams. But nonetheless his scores were always the highest academically. It came around the final exam of the course. And I was determined to get the highest grade and Cully knew it. So we took the exam. And I was sweating bullets. Exam done and we didn't know the score till the next day. So we all went out drinking. And then the next day
we got to class my instructor handed out lowest to highest and he kept Cully's and my test till last and said we have two papers left. I looked at Cully and he looked at me and we laughed and sweated. And then the instructor walked around passed me and I thought sheeet I didn't get the highest grade crap I thought. Then he passed Cully and then it threw me off. Then he walked over to me and gave me my exam and said VanDyke had the highest exam in the class and I even did the extra credit and that was why I beat Cully. He didnt do the extra credit and that is how much I beat him by. He slapped his knees and then I stood up after getting my exam back and Shouted loudly, " I am the smartest man in the world!"
haahhahaahaha I laugh because that is how the world is. So much tension
and competition. I thought it would be funny to say that. And so there is my story! "I am the smartest man in the world!

no. There are many smart people. We all have special gifts. Teams are much better. I think. but it is so funny to me.

Thank you to all. for my promotion. It is said my boss got fired. I do feel bad for him some what. But I am not going to do what he did. But I realized. We can all mess up like that. But it has been so far fun and hard and scary at the same time but you guys are right. Once the flow of things is going good it is getting better. And I have been training my new assistant on many things so he can take up some of the work. That has been the biggest help is training him so I am not doing 2 jobs anymore. Very hard to take care of two jobs at once and doing 16 hour days going on 3 months. but I am working less hours know that I have been training him more. But it has been very educational and I am learning a whole different perspective..icon_study.gif
