thanks, alan. I read, and re-read the article you posted above.

performed this on R1 and R2:
    wr erase
    reload

    and now...on both routers:
"s0/0 is up, line protocol is up"

but I still cant ping each other. icon_redface.gif

    R1#sh frame map
    Serial0/0.100 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 100(0x64,0x1840), broadcast

    R2#sh run
    interface Serial0/0
    no ip address
    encapsulation frame-relay
    no keepalive
    no dce-terminal-timing-enable
    no fair-queue
    !
    interface Serial0/0.100 point-to-point
    ip address 100.100.100.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 100

    ____________________________________________________

    R2#sh frame map
    Serial0/0.100 (up): point-to-point dlci, dlci 100(0x64,0x1840), broadcast

    R2#sh run
    interface Serial0/0
    no ip address
    encapsulation frame-relay
    no keepalive
    !
    interface Serial0/0.100 point-to-point
    ip address 100.100.100.2 255.255.255.0
    snmp trap link-status
    frame-relay interface-dlci 100

DCE end of the cable is attached to R1.

so far, I've put this much work for @#$$%! FRS lab: 8 hours on Sunday, 2 hours on Monday, 5 hours today and still counting...

And this time, I followed TechExams CCNA Worklab.

As I've said earlier, I was 'trying' to follow Chris Bryant's and FREEccnaworkbook FRS lab. My mistake was, I only had 3 routers whereas the workbooks I was trying to follow had a total of 4! So, I kept doing the same mistake by entering the wrong command on the wrong interface!!! I dont know how much more to explain it, but I was able to make it work by cutting the 3rd router out of the picture...literally (used MS Paint and chopped off the 3rd router!) icon_lol.gif

had to write this down to get it into my head:
    FRS#int s0/0
    (config-if)# frame-relay route 201 int s0/1 200
(take my local route 201 going to remote interface s0/1. Once you get there, use their local route 200)

    FRS#int s0/1
    (config-if)# frame-relay route 200 int s0/0 201
(take my local route 200 going to remote interface s0/0. Once you get there, use their local route 201)

I like this message: "Can not switch on same interface" icon_lol.gif

    FRS#sh frame route
Input Intf Input Dlci Output Intf Output Dlci Status
    Serial0/0 201 Serial0/1 200 active
    Serial0/1 200 Serial0/0 201 active

    on FRS:
Serial0/0 is up, line protocol is up
Serial0/1 is up, line protocol is up

    R2#ping 10.10.12.3
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 10.10.12.3, timeout is 2 seconds:
    !!!!!
    Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 56/57/60 ms

finished just in time to watch Bulls and Pacers!

    Thanks all!!!

Here is what I have so far, I have a IBM x235 tower server, a 2610-wic-t1, 2611-wic1-dsu, and 2900. I am not sure of what memory any of it has. I am just getting started and this is what has been either given to me or I bought. I am currently wanting to setup a home lab for the ccent and later the ccna. I need to know what i may need for the server and if the cisco equipment I have is enough to get me by or if I need to add to it for just the CCENT, I will have to aquire things slowly and this is the reason for getting one certification at a time and to space it out so I can afford to buy lab equipment as needed.

There's a couple of ways you can go. If you prefer to work with real gear, add a 1760 or 1721, a pair of additional WIC-1DSU-T1 modules and a pair of 2950 switches. You can also load GNS3 on that server and just add a pair of 2950 switches.

Do I need to add any NIC's to the server?
  • alan2308alan2308 Member Posts: 1,854 ■■■■■■■■□□
If you intend to integrate the simulated equipment with the real equipment then yes, you'll need a couple Ethernet ports in the server. If you don't intend to integrate the two worlds, then it doesn't matter.

What you have now is more than enough to get you through the CCENT, so there's really no rush to run out and buy anything right away. You've got time to formulate a game plan right now.

    Hey everyone,

Rather than starting a new thread, I figure I'd post in here since there is already a wealth of information. I am starting on my CCENT/CCNA and am fortunate to work at a NOC with plenty of spare routers. However they are a mash of various WICs and IOS with different memory so I'll try my best to lay down my current plan on getting a decent lab going for my CCNA studies.
    • 2610 with IOS 12.1(1)
      • (2) WIC-1DSU-T1
      • Ethernet
    • 2610 with IOS 12.1(1)
      • (1) ISDN BRI - WIC-1B-U
      • (1) WIC-1T
      • Ethernet
    • 2650 with IOS 12.2(1c)
      • Fast Ethernet
      • NW-1E2W ( WIC-1T, Ethernet, AUI )
      • 2 Free WIC Slots
    • 3620 with IOS 12.1(3A)
      • Fast Ethernet
      • Token Ring
      • 2 Free WIC slots
    • 2610 IOS 12.0(10)
      • (2) WIC-1DSU-T1
      • Ethernet
What would be the most cost efficient way to organize these routers for a proper CCNA lab? Would the IOS be sufficient for the CCNA even though it is a tiny bit outdated?

Seems to me it would be great if I could just put 2 WIC-1T on everything with the 2650 getting hooked up with a NM-4A/S to be the frame relay switch and the appropriate cables. I don't mind sinking money for the cables and WICs, since they are letting me use them for my studies, but I would just like it to be cost effective for me since I will be purchasing some switches down the line. Looking at 3 [FONT=&quot]Cisco 2950 WS-C2950-12 for STP and the remaining CCNA goodness. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Intervlan routing will be taken care of by the fast ethernet port on the 2650 correct? Thanks again!

This is a really good resource: CCNA Certification: CCNA, Cisco certification, Cisco routers, Cisco switches, Ci

For my lab i will be building the following - I'm not fussed about cost because i know that i can easily sell the gear on for about the same price, due to demand :)

    Router:
    2 x 2610xm
    1 x 2611xm

    Switch:
    3 x 2950T

    Modules:
    1 x NM-4a/s
    3 x WIC-1t

    Other:

    Back to Back DTE/DCE cables.
    Rack 12ru

Please comment and review my lab :)

    Thanks

Hi, I'm due to start studying my CCNA with the Cisco Academy in October so I thought I'd start early to
try and get a head start. So far I've done a bit of reading and viewed a couple of lessons, anyway I've
decided to start building a lab and so far I have bought...

    2 x 2950 SWITCHES
    1 x 1760 ROUTER 64MB/32MB

So what do you guys suggest would be most useful for me next?
  • jdballingerjdballinger Member Posts: 252
One more router, one more switch, and you're set.

You can score a 1760 on eBay and max out the memory - it's just like upgrading the RAM on a PC - for under $30. I got 3 this way. Total cost $105 including:

    2 x 1760
1 x 1760-VPN/K9 (listed as just a 1760, but had a VPN module and 96 MB DRAM which would make it the VPN/K9 Bundle)
4 x WIC-1DSU-T1 (I bought an extra so that one of the routers can act as a DCE to the other 2)
3 x MEM1700-128D (To kick them up to 192 MB)
3 x WIC/VIC Blanks (To cover some empty slots)

I spent $90 a while back on 3 x 2950 switches. I downloaded and installed the newest IOS they would take from Cisco (Cisco let's you download Switch IOS, but not Router IOS without SmartNet).

The console port is for configuring the device, no network traffic is going through it.

I went all T1 as I can make my own crossover cables [using Cat. 5e] cheap.

Thanks for your replies, can anybody point in the right direction regarding WICs? How many would I need?
Do I need them on both routers?
Sorry to ask such noobie questions there's just so much to try and learn..

Any recommendations for a second router?
Also cables? I have a 'plugable' console cable, what others will I need?

    What's your budget?

Do you plan to go after CCNP and beyond?

I guess my budget would be £100 ($150 us)

I would get either an 1841 or 2621XM

I've been able to get 1841's for around $125 on eBay.

Interestingly, I've been seeing the 2821 going for that or less. I've been trying to score one for under $100 [by bidding,] but no luck. They are available Buy It Now for $119 (with IOS 12.x) and up (with IOS 15.1 starts at $130). I just double checked on the 1841 (I would rather have a 2821) and there is one for $99 Buy It Now, but it doesn't say what version of IOS it has.

The 2821s seem to be a bit more expensive in the UK but I'll keep searching..

I have several 2811 routers and 3560 switches at work that I can use.

Will this make a decent lab fir CCNA?
  • HAMPHAMP Member Posts: 163
I posted this question in the post pics of your lab, and I am now finding this thread to where it should have been posted.

"In my lab I have a 2960 and 3550 switch, and I’m not sure if I should get the 3560 now or get a 2950 and call it a day until I truly need the 3560."

    Routers are 1841, 2801 and 2811.

I have to get a couple of WIC cards and cables this weekend.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  • HAMPHAMP Member Posts: 163
Well, I’m a little excited about this weekend. I will be adding to my rack, so I can get more involved with different setups.
    I have:
    Routers: 1841(Wic-1t), 2801(Wic-1t), 2811
    Switches: 2960 and 3550

    Getting this weekend:
    (4) Wic-1t
    (3) 2950 switches

Again, any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

here is my 2 cents....for the full CCNA course lab, u will need no more than two 2950 switch, one 2650XM router to practice the ROAS & one 2801 Router to practice NAT.....accesories wise, buy couple WIC-2T serial interface modules for both router so u can connect em together, couple pair of crossover cable & couple pair of straight-thru cable & a pair of DCE-DTE serial cable to connect the serial ports of the router......u should be good to go........just to avoid pain, try using packet tracer for all ur router lab except NAT.....it's lot easier & less time consuming.....better than GNS3....good luck
  • HAMPHAMP Member Posts: 163
Thanks omi2123!!I was going to buy (2) WIC-2T, but for now it was cheaper to get the 1T cards. I have just about all (or extra cables), except I will be picking up 2 more serial cables.I think I will have to endure the pain of using the lab instead of packet tracer, that was the main reason for me getting it. I do know what you mean, but I want to get into it this way. What is GNS3? ************NEVERMIND, I LOOKED UP GNS3****************
  • mikeybinecmikeybinec Member Posts: 484 ■■■□□□□□□□
2950s and 26XXs work for CCENT. Add a few 2960s for Etherchannel.. But for IPv6 practice, Packet Tracer will do
