What's your favorite piece of obsolete software?
There was a piece of software called BumpTop which allowed you to organise your desktop like you would with your desk. You pile icons on top of each other and group them and hang stuff on the wall - Google ended up buying it out and absorbed the team in to Android. I always missed it when it was gone because I thought the idea was pretty cool. This is a video of it.
A very close second is PKZip.exe & PKUnzip.exe just because it was one of the first command-line tools I got to know in MS-DOS 6.22
Anyways... what software have you used that you really liked and is now obsolete? - Maybe it was bought by another company, maybe it was open-sourced and faded away or maybe it was a game they stopped making which you really liked?

Somebody mentioned that to me the other day, and I had to look it up. The sad part is I'm definitely old enough to remember it.
The gist of it was funny though: some Ph.D.'s did some kind of study and determined that the UI of Microsoft Bob would have mass appeal since it just made sense to navigate it. Then it bombed horribly. -
DevilWAH Member Posts: 2,997 ■■■■■■■■□□I can't even remember the last time I've seen someone use WinZIP - I moved to WinRAR years ago so I could open ISOs. I think the last version I used myself was like v8 or v9 - they are now on version 18.5!!
Even winrar is old school for me these days, moved on to Zip7, handles more formats and unlike Winrar is opensource so complete free, unlike winrar that is shareware.
but talking of old software, how about napster and mIRC, I know file sharing now days is really all about stealing the latest movies and software, but right at the beginning it was a much more personal thing. and while I was sharing music with people all over the world, I actually talked to a lot of them. IT was much more like going down the pub, meeting your friends and leading them a CD. Then it hit the mainstream and became what it is today.
Still use mIRC some time to chat to old friends- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. Albert Einstein

@DevilWAH - yeah I was thinking that after I posted it. I've an old version of WinRAR which does the trick, but I've used 7-ZIP as well.
RE: Napster... then Morpheus... then Kazaa.. then eMule... then Bittorent! I used to be mad in to file sharing but lately I couldn't be bothered! It takes too much time, Netflix is much easier to use. -

Best thing about file sharing was that I lernt a load about encoding and Codec's, actuly taught me a lot about how media is compressed, even wrote my own basic codec once. And when i say basic it was basic!!! proof of consept never actually got to the point of encoding real data.- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. Albert Einstein

I absolutely love it, but I must say I love the old stuff much more than the new stuff (like mailing lists over forums )
IRC has some serious computer-related channels on Freenode (vmware/security/any programming language, linux distros), I idle there a lot. there are some interesting technology related conversations happening there, it's actually a very effective way of learning. -

Glad to see someone else who thinks the same! Back then it was just more fun figuring things out and using them. Me and my friends also talk about our old computer memories spanning the 90s.
