Disappointed with my salary after 1.5 years and a MCSE?!

Alright, I have been doing IT since September 2006 for a smaller credit card incentives company. I was hired on as "Systems Support" at their remote travel agency at 27k. Now, I admit I knew basically nothing coming into this job and it was a definite fluke I was basically given an entire LAN to administer. Yes, I was on my own from day one administering this site's entire LAN by myself. I have basically been in charge or anything and everything that plugs into the wall. I also manage 10 servers locally.

Here I am over a year and a half later with a MCSE:Security paid for by my company. I still have lots to learn but I am heaps and bounds more comfortable troubleshooting problems. At my first review I was given a 3k raise and approval of training to the tune of 7k. Now, I sit here at 30k/year and this great certification, but little satisfaction in my current salary. Yes, I appreciate the opportunity given to me by my employer, and no I cannot quit because I signed a 2 year contract saying I would not quit for 2 years and if I do I owe 7k within 12 months of quitting and 3.5k in 13-24 months of quitting.

My review isn't until September, but this salary is killing me and my gf is quitting her job soon, so I will be the sole rent payer come June.

In addition, by boss brought up the fact during my last review that the 7k training factored into my total compensation, and now he briefly mentioned that it may have an impact on my review this year which I think is totally unfair considering it played its role last year and should have no effect this coming review.

I have an idea of what I would like to make and I believe I am worth somewhere in the 36k-37k range come September. No?

Look for a job elsewhere at your expected salary range while still doing the current one.

Lol, I hate stumbling on old threads like this because I never pay attention to the post dates. The OP said he got into IT in 2006 and he was only making 30K. I'm thinking "Good Lord! Your job must hate you if you've been in the field over 10 years with an MCSE and only make that much!"

Well you have a little over a year of experience in IT? Your salary is not actually that bad based on your experience.

I know guys who have been in IT for 5+ years who are making 30k or less. I know a guy 10+ years of experience in IT who got unemployed and had to take a 20k paycut just to find another IT job. He was making 60k year in previous job, he got let go and the next company he got hired for offered him only 40k a year. He took the job because no other employers seemed to want him despite him sending out hundreds of resumes. He was unable to find another IT job for over 8 months, so he finally settled for a 20k paycut.

Jobs are tough these days, especially getting IT jobs. Even landing a $10-$15/hr computer job can be very difficult. I finally landed an IT job in the $10-$15/hr range, but even at that salary there was like 50-100+ people applying to each of the jobs I applied to according to Indeed.com

Find a job that pays you 7k more than this per year and move on with your life. Let them come after you. For 7k they probably won't. If they do you have the money because you found a job that pays you way more. 36k-37k where do you live? That is way low. Find out what your worth via interviews and jump ship when the going it good!

Hell of a bump. I know OP is long gone, but no way should you expect a raise because you upskilled but stayed in the same position. You would have to look elsewhere.

It's simple arithmetic folks:
If he left "early" he would have to pay a $3500 "payback".

All that means is...... make sure the next job pays more than 27k + $3500.

All the advice to "stay until september" was nonsense.

He should have GTFO ASAP. (and apparantly he did; new job paid 48k)
