Well.. I took the test today using the links in this thread and a few other places and I failed the test today. :)

I'm not a web developer or programmer (at all) .. I know I averaged about half of the test correctly.
I'm not that discouraged because I gained a lot of knowledge from studying for the test, especially HTML5.

When a test comes out like this with a free voucher, it's crazy "not" to take a chance, study it the best you can and take the exam.

Thanks for the study links Robert, that was very kind of you to post out there.
I feel that those links helped me out most of all.

Passed it first time round today!!! 700 on the dot, would you believe? Thanks for your guide, I used it along with MVA and this another guide I found online Blogged By Chris » Microsoft Exam 70-480 Study Guide. I am really impressed with myself considering I had zero JavaScript experience prior to this. Thanks all :D

    Some advice would be appreciated.

I am looking to sit this exam in the near future. I have decided to take the approach of learning JavaScript from scratch first (covering the JavaScript exam objectives in the process) and then focusing on the specific areas of HTML5 and CSS3 that are relevant to the exam.

I am already proficient in HTML4 and CSS2, so I am not overly concerned about learning the new elements in 5 and 3 respectively (although areas like HTML canvas etc don't look overly straightforward).

Do people think this is a good approach?

My reasoning is that I want to develop a good understanding of Javascript regardless of the objectives for this cert, so I thought this would be a perfect time to pick it up from scratch and go into as much detail as possible...

    Hello,

I'm sitting for this exam in mid july. I'm trying to gather resources and purchased the training bundle book.

I see a lot of people recommending pluralsight videos for HTML5, what about the lynda ones ? From what I saw they seemed to be far more detailed. They also have a few DIY project videos for jquery and html5.

For Javascript I'm planning to use the following Tutsplus premium video tutorials:

    Javascript fundamentals 101 (https://tutsplus.com/course/javascript-fundamentals/)
    advanced javascript fundamentals (https://tutsplus.com/course/advanced-javascript-fundamentals/)
    Object Oriented Javascript (https://tutsplus.com/course/object-oriented-javascript/)

Form CSS3, I'm a bit uncertain. Also I don't know if I should go through CSS2 again even though I know it (intermediate level probably)

I think you are doing it right. The way I see it, you can't really touch HTML5 JS API without knowing Javascript first.

Thanks for the book reference Slowhand. This book seems very Windows 8 - centric however, is that an important element of 70-480 ? Or is it that the HTML, CSS and Javascript covered in the book makes it a good adjunct reference for the test (if one ignores the Windows 8 focus of it?).

This thread is so thorough, I'm wondering if one shouldn't use this thread as the basis of their study for the test? Rvince

    Hello,

Can someone please tell me if it's necessary to know the exact syntax of functions in javascript for this exam ? I'm talking about String/Array/Number functions specifically.

Also, I have about 25 days to prepare and I have no background in HTML5 and CSS3.Will I benefit more from reading a book on HTML5,CSS3,JS or just watch video tutorials ? I don't know if I remember all the information just watching videos.

In short, yes. You need to understand how JavaScript works. You also need to know some jQuery and how common functions like $.ajax(), among others, work as well. 25 days is not really enough time unless you have 6 months experience at least in building data-driven JavaScript applications.

I would like to read your experience about the time it took you to finish the test. For me, it wasn't enough... I really took my time to read and understand every single question and then I answered. I passed, but if I had been given more time I would have done this better. Regards

I have taken a lot of MS certification exams. And I have really come to know myself and my knowledge. In most cases, either I know the answer or I do not. I read the question carefully, and I select my answer. If I do not feel I know the answer but I might be able to work it out, I select it for review. If it is clear that I cannot workout the correct answer from the information provided (like a question that requires you know syntax of a command or the properties of a C# or JS object), then I just go with my gut and click the one I think looks right.

The longest I ever took on any exam was the Windows 7 configuration exam when it was released to beta testers. It had 75 questions and I really wanted to take time and give feedback regarding the exam. That's kind of the point of beta testing an exam after all. It took me two hours to complete. I was exhausted afterwards.

But in general I have a pretty good methodology. Like I said, I read the question carefully and if I believe I know the answer, I select it and move on. I do not question myself or review questions that I am sure I know/don't know. That allows me some time to really think about the small number of questions I have some doubts about. I think those tend to be around 5 questions each exam I take.

Robert, any thoughts on the lynda.com html5 video lessons ? Are they good enough for this examination ? If I had to prioritize the subjects, would you say that JS should be top priority followed by html5 and then css3 ?

Sorry, I didn't see your message until now. But since you passed I guess it didn't matter! I like Lynda, but honestly I think that PluralSight is a better investment for a developer.

Yeah, +1 for Pluralsight. I'm making my way through their Python course right now.

    I passed this exam today.
Now it will be some certificate or only if i complete the three exams?
  • RobertKaucherRobertKaucher Member Posts: 4,299 ■■■■■■■■■■
With the 480 you can get an "MS Specialist" certificate but you will have to order it from the MCP site. There is a cost for shipping but it's not much.

See the MCP site for more details. And congratulations!

Thanks to Robert Kaucher! I'm getting ready to take this exam before the MVC4 exam but was wondering if you could post your link in your signature block so we could find it based on your last reply.

I have covered a lot of material lately. I'm going to cover the pluralsight vids and do some web coding and hope for a double take. If I don't i'll have to foot the bill on this first test, if i don't pass. Can you provide feed back on the MVC4 exam? Also does anyone now if they plan to update this MVC4 exam with MVC5 material?

I'd like to pass all three exams by end of 2014! Thanks everyone for this site and tread!

    Joe

People look down on **** in this forum, and won't give you info on where to find them. Instead, try to go through the stuff that RobertKaucher provided and learn the material.

Have some dignity and self respect. Why ****? Where's the sense of accomplishment in that? Study hard and make that pass count.

I have extensive experience in HTML5, CSS and AJAX so I'm kinda going in without studying much. I just brushed up on the Web Worker API and yeah... icon_rolleyes.gif. jQuery too!

Haha...I bombed it! I don't know but I think I got an abundant amount of proprietary questions about the Web Worker API and Microsoft-specific processes (which makes sense since it's a MS exam icon_lol.gif). Also, the GUI interface is sorta unintuitive (or I'm just dumb icon_silent.gif) but I thought I'd set an answer a couple of times but I had to move it to an area to the right - I thought it was an extra area to sort. Haha...on to the next one though icon_study.gif.

So I just purchased the MS Exam Book for this test and I've gotten as far as Chapter 1.1 before hitting the first depreciated/obsolete tag being taught as current HTML5 semantic markup.

Does anyone know if the test is being updated to reflect changes in the HTML5 spec - or should I study what is presented in the book? I checked the website for known errors in the book, but there aren't any listed.

I'm coming from a desktop background so I'm a bit worried about this exam and want to make sure I get off on the right foot (which is why I started using the MS exam book)

    Hi Robert,
I am new to html5 css3 and Javascript. Do you think I can Crack the exam before jan2017 ? Or I should start by foundation first then go to exam ?

That is the topmost effective programming language to build a website or any web page for the browser.

HTML is the hypertext transfer protocol.HTML is used for adding more impactful resources such as image, text, video, etc.

CSS is the cascading style sheet. CSS is helpful for creating a layout of web pages to make a beautiful web page.

Javascript is the programming code used to more optimized for the web site. JS is for security or a more powerful web design.
