Deathmage Banned Posts: 2,496Well I can safely say without a resonable doubt this new job is the correct move for me.
I will be working closely with another Network Engineer that up until the last year recently got his CCNA and I will be working with him to grow the company. He's willing to teach me things and I'm willing to teach him Windows/VMware and my expereince as a JOAT's.
See the company is small but has the passion to grow bigger....
Assuming I do well here I can see it being a great job long-term; one thing I like since everyone pulls their own weight, even the bosses (there all certfied engineers), is there is no politics just one group working towards a goal to provide a excellent expereince to customers.
it's only been day 3 so far but I'm glad I made this decision.... -

These two points can make all the difference in how much you enjoy your job. Having management that actually understands how to do the job, as well as a team environment where you are all working together rather than against each other is definitely a good thing to have.Have: CISSP, CISM, CISA, CRISC, eJPT, GCIA, GSEC, CCSP, CCSK, AWS CSAA, AWS CCP, OCI Foundations Associate, ITIL-F, MS Cyber Security - USF, BSBA - UF, MSISA - WGU

Deathmage Banned Posts: 2,496I must say the exposure I've had in one week is insane.
The new company is not only a MSP but a ISP so I'm actually next week going to be helping (building the L2/L3 configs) of some new Cisco Switches to upgrade the network with QOS on the ISP backbone. Also I've been shadowing the vExpert in-house and he's teaching me sooo much it's insane! ... on top of this the other Network Engineer is showing me a bunch of things with Cisco that I just can't learn in a book.
I can only imagine what a few weeks down the road will be like.... -

Deathmage Banned Posts: 2,496A big Update:
Over the past few months I've noticed that the new job doesn't have set-in-stone pricing for it's MSP services and the company is quite disorganized in contrast to what they said in my interview. Also this company is also a ISP and well lets just say they have been losing customers like crazy. There current customer base is shrinking, because of there location no one has money to spend and some can't sustain IT upgrades every year and are very reluctant to spend money. Also over the past 3 weeks customers were complaining about internet speeds which was directly related to the infrastructure not able to sustain the traffic. I basically came onto a company I thought was secure and stable only to find they weren't and didn't have the money to sustain there own infrastrucure and with them losing customer left I got the feeling having me on-board wasn't smart on there part at all and I knew that what happened yesterday was going to happen.......
I think they realized having me onboard was a bad call and they decided to part ways with me. I'm really not upset, I wasn't doing what they told me in the interview, I was only doing remote work, nothing in the field like designing networks, deploying VMware, fixing problems in short because they haven't had any new business since I came on-board.
It's a very small company only 8 people, so if they start losing customers they can't sustain the losses, it makes perfect sense in my mind, just wish I knew it was that shaky or that they were upfront with me about this 3 months ago. It does suck, but I'm in high spirits since I know I'll find something soon. I'm currently done with my VCP5-DCV training and I scheduled the exam for the 17th because of work availability but I'm going to reschedule it for sooner and then re-fresh on the Project + book I read 3 weeks ago and take that exam too. Then move back into my CCNA study that I was nearly done with when I got the last minute invite to the Stanly class back in September and the CCNA study got sidelined.
I'm not looking upon this as personal, I learned some things the past 3 months from others that were IT people, mainly just confirmations of things I already knew just wanted another side to the thought process. You know like you get certified in a subject matter but it's always neat to have another person to talk to that knows what your talking about instead of calling up tech support and you can sense the glazed-over-eyes impression.
I've updated my resume and submitted 22 resumes yesterday and to my surprise most of the job sites seem to have a uptick in job postings. I'm just going to be way more selective this time and really make sure I get a good sense of the company. I've also re-contacted that local MSP that I'm not sure if you guys remember me talking about that was offering a 1099 contract, the owner responded to my email within 15 minutes and wanted to talk to me next week, my knowledge of VMware compared to what I knew back in July compared to now is woefully different and even back in July I knew how ot setup everything in VMware just not to the extent I know now from labbing, the 3 month stint of observation, and reading. I'm going to build from this expereince and really move on. I've realized that I shouldn't work for really small companies in the future since things like this cause instability to come in question about your job and that's not something I want to think about....
What is your guys opinion on this? - I know some of you said you didn't want me to be jobless in a few months time, I wish I took that advice and really checked them out. I guess we all live and learn.... -
Khaos1911 Member Posts: 366Good luck, Deathmage. I really felt your passion for IT when I read this post. Things will work out, just keep grinding.

anoeljr Member Posts: 278 ■■■□□□□□□□Sorry the new job didn't work out, but I'm glad you have another interview lined up. All things happen for a reason. And you can't worry about what-ifs, that's just life. The people who succeed are the ones who keep on trucking, and you're one of those people. Good luck!

Deathmage Banned Posts: 2,496Thanks guys, I never found a reason to glop on the past. I like moving forward and improving.
The other company that I have a interview tomorrow is a company that is much bigger and in a larger population area so they have way more business.
I took the last jump under the impression I would be going to customer sites all the time to deploy and build-out virualization and infrastructure networks which I just didn't see with the reducing customer base.
I'd rather get off the sinking ship now than later on down the road... -
Deathmage Banned Posts: 2,496Shortest stint of unemployment ever! ... 1 day.
Got offered a job as a VMware Deployment Engineer for basic to intermediate esxi deployments on a 1099 contract.
...now I can get the hands-on VMware expereince I want so much! - can start getting real-world knowledge!

Plan on taking my VCP5-DCV this week anyways so this is positive.... just got done with CBT Nuggets video and the 5.1 blueprints and a few other topics Essesson suggested.
Once I'm done with the 5.1 I'll hop onto the 5.5 study but I use 5.5 all the time, conquering the 5.1 exam is more for me own curiosity really since even though 5.5 is current most people still use 5.1. -
Jon_Cisco Member Posts: 1,772 ■■■■■■■■□□Glad you landed something quickly. It sucks that IT is sometimes very unstable but as long as your learning as you go I have no doubt it will all work out. Good Luck with the next company!

Deathmage Banned Posts: 2,4961st day at new job, as a VMware Solution Engineer.
Ironically today I got two phone calls for interviews from resumes I posted on Friday afternoon, that I scheduled for early tomorrow morning and Wednesday.
I guess the job market in this area isn't as bad as I thought or perhaps my skillsets are in-demand and they are fresh (Plus I can bring techie to 5,000 ft from 50,00ft, communication is so key!). -
Cleverclogs Member Posts: 95 ■■■□□□□□□□Your post more than anything proves that maintaining a positive attitude really does help. My job is also under threat from outsourcing, but it's my studying and the search for a new and better job that drives me forwards each day. Keep up the good work mate

I know it is late to the party and not really relevant anymore (congrats btw.) but getting out immediately ? One good reason is usually to keep paying your billsMy own knowledge base made public: http://open902.com -
JustFred Member Posts: 678 ■■■□□□□□□□Not only that, sometimes it is also the kick you need in the nuts to move on and find what you really want to do as well as learn and grow. Those are experiences no one can take away from you.[h=2]"After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true." Spock[/h]

hurricane1091 Member Posts: 919 ■■■■□□□□□□So aren't the VCA's the ones that do not require you to take the $3000 class? If so, I might have to get on that if it's going to pay me that much..

Certifications aren't were I land the money, experience is. I'm a quick thinking, quick learner, solution-oriented engineer that finds solutions to technical problems.
My skillset far outpace my current certification knowledge, I just lack the time and confidence at times to get those certifications, however once I set my mind to them I get them.
Plus I can talk the lingo between a technical egg and a non-technical egg and have them both understand the subject matter. -
hurricane1091 Member Posts: 919 ■■■■□□□□□□Looking at the VCA-DCV, I'm going to take that. I was shown around vSphere and how to upgrade ESXI host a few weeks ago and did not have a firm understanding. I see value in this free class combined with CCNA & MCSA to have a firm general understanding of the network infrastructure.

every little bit helps.
my next goal is CCNA, seeing a need for networking knowledge more and more beyond my understanding of HP/Dell switches, a solid grasp of networking after VMware is my current goal. -
