Nice! He's going over post-8.3 code for NAT, right? He did for my class. He ended up having a separate day of old IPS and pre-8.3 code for the people who planned on taking the CCIE Security lab as it is now but it was just that one week thankfully.

He's doing both in the same lesson, we're going over post 8.3 and then 8.2 code immediately afterwards, so Dynamic Nat 8.3, then Dynamic Nat 8.2.
I think that may make it easier to go through it all, we had about half our class say they are at least interested in CCIE Security so that may be why he changed the format a little. It does look like it'll extend ASA to week 3 though.

Week 3 was ASA in my class too. That's normal. My class went an extra week. One good thing is that he will extend the class if needed rather than **** you guys on content or skip stuff altogether.

That's great to hear, I'm glad they won't rush or skim over anything to make sure they fit in the timeline. It looked like they wanted to finish ASA this week but I'm fine with extending it, it's a lot to take in.

Like drinking from the firehose, right? It only gets better here on out. Be sure to do the rewatch and I promise I'll finish my notes this week. I got a little crazy with work and my security lab so I didn't have time to rewatch the very last class and take notes on it but I have a demo guide I need to write on Lancope and FireAMP so I guess I'll need to watch that last class in order to write that guide up.

Exactly! We just ended class now, and we decided on having it next week even with Easter so we don't extend too much into summer. How is your security lab going? I've followed your blog a bit and have mine similarly setup for the most part.

What is Lancope? I see that's something new Cisco purchased, how does it tie into the security track?

It's not based off old outdated topics, you get a pod to lab the whole time, you get thousands of pages of workbooks and you have an instructor who has decades of Advanced Services experience instead of a professional instructor

You haven an IE in DC. You have attended R&S Bootcamp and Sec ZtoH course. Given that Cisco does not have a dominant presence in the Security market as it does with its R&S and Collaboration; do you think the next IE Sec ver 5 is going to make some impact? There are other strong players like Palo Alto, Juniper, Checkpoint, Fortinet in the industry.

I am fiercely deciding whether to take up IE in R&S or IE in Sec. I am inkling toward Sec, but my concern is about the career avenue with IE Sec. Any insight is appreciated.

You're listing firewalls. While Cisco still has a big market share in terms of firewalling, there's a lot more to security than that. Quick review of Cisco Security:
IPS/Malware Protection - Sourcefire and AMP dedicated appliances
Content Filtering for Web and Security - Ironport ESA/WSA, Cloud Web Security, URL Filtering on Firepower, etc
DNS Security - OpenDNS
Network Access Control - ISE
NGFW - Firepower 4100/9300s
Endpoint Security - AMP For Endpoints, AnyConnect
Behavior and Anomaly detection - Lancope StealthWatch
Threat Analytics - Cognitive Threat Analytics
Security Management - Defense Orchestrator

There are always going to be strong players in the field and some might be better than Cisco and some might not be - but I very much doubt any one company has the breadth of security products that Cisco does and I very much doubt Cisco is going to bow out of the security field.

As far as the other security vendors, Juniper has been selling off pieces of their security business here and there so I don't really see SRXs as much anymore. I don't see a whole lot of Fortinet in the $1B company space either which is what I work with. Checkpoint is still around and kicking butt. Palo Alto I see more of though to be honest and there's a strong appeal there in terms of user experience - not so much security - but good GUIs sell and Cisco and other vendors could learn from that. While having strong cross-vendor firewall skills are important, I don't want to just be the "firewall gal"

- Cisco to keep investing heavy on Security, given the global rise in online security threats
- In 7-10 years CLI (command line interface) to fully phase out. All about API (application programmable interface)
- All networkers to start getting into network programming
- Network Programmability Specialist and Cyber Security Specialist certs already started
- All CCIE labs would incorporate API, SDN, DNA, IoT (see attached)

The good point is that the CCIE will reflect those changes and will not become an obsolete certification in the industry.
The other interesting point is represented by the blended skills that the profession will require in a couple of years from now. With regard existing exams for obtaining a certification in network programmability, I have not found much training material online. I wanted to study programmability since I used to do some scripting and it would be fun to play the game.

My strategy starting June 1, 2016:

- Start my CCNP Security modules
- Setup UNET lab at home (unetlab.com)
- Prepare for CCNP Sec certs
- Read Harris Andrea series, Narbik, Sadat, Yusuf, Jabiz etc
- Listen to INE Sec ATC
- Lab INE
- Join Sec study group
- Join Zero to Hero (Dec batch. Will be able to get the most out of it then)
- Read and lab Natalie Timms

Anything to add?

I put off the R&S and am working on Security now. I'll do R&S next after I get the CCIE Security. It didn't make sense to pursue R&S given all the security stuff I'm doing at work

I am making a transition from Voice to Security. The lack of security knowledge bothers me and I don't consider myself an accomplished IT without it . Do you enjoy working with Security devices? Do you have to deal with end users?

@Fumanchu - I work in pre-sales so I have to deal with clients. I do enjoy the technical aspects of my job and I do set up POCs and do an extensive amount of labbing and testing. Every once in awhile (or additionally more times if I want to) I can jump into TAC cases and help out with my customers when issues arise. I don't have "on call" or anything like that but that's more to do with my job than the security field.

I have some CLC's to use and might do this.

I have a newborn at home, so I need to make sure the wife is okay with me spending Saturdays doing this.

One thing to be aware of is that each class is recorded so even if your wife isn't a fan of you waking up early every Saturday, you could be watching the recording any time of the week

I really loved the way you express about this program. I was looking for a good suggestion and I'm going for this program indeed. Just waiting to have my manager confirmation and start on August 2016. Thanks for the positive feedback. Perhaps my only question to you would be:
So far have you seeing any flaws the way the course is provided? Any negative feedback that sometimes helps as well?
